..... Cyprus simply cant have enough collateral to cover its Target2 liabilities, so there will be quite nice hole in the Eurosystem if they make a bank run and then leave. I am wondering how much did they already withdrawn through

Tom nice to see a market post in this thread.

The doomers are back after the Cyprus deal but I think most are missing the forest for the trees. Look IMO, more than Cyprus alone the problem was Cyprus solution. Opening pandora's box on deposit losses and Euro short term movement controls set an awful risk precedent for Spain and Italy later.

All the other talk on deposit runs, panic and doom is just more noise than reality. "Cyprus simply can't have enough collateral to cover its Target2 liabilities" is not true under any technical measures. Is crumbs in the context and not even the worst bank crisis in the World (read Argentina or the Asian Crisis in the 90s) 100% of the money just vanishes from the system. Is simply not true .

More importantly you MUST include a key factor in the Cyprus Bank equation: Foreign Capitals:

  1. All of the foreign account holders knew way in advance what was going to happen. All serious studies show that [sadly if you want] the benefits of leaving the money in Cyprus even with the bailout losses (that prolly wont be even 100% in the long term) by far exceed the losses with this measure. Why?

    1. Don't forget that most foreign money there is either "dirty" or for tax reasons. According to estimates, the cost of bailing in from them is still at least 15% in average "cheaper" than what would (and will) they have paid in taxes in Russia, all the EU countries and even Switzerland and the US...and the other part, the dirty money, don't have the luxury of moving money out of a lax tax "paradise"
    2. In simple words, their [foreign holders] losses is just the cost of doing business so there is no longer a Cyprus issue ...the real problem is in the next EZ "crisis episode" whenever and wherever it is .... More importantly ECB hasn't take a stand yet neither show us any real impact so most those comments are just doomers noise in my view...

I am more than sure than some of the big money (not only Russian but also European from which the UK has a big chunk of it) and bastards [foreign "banks" or related] took the money out way in advance ...I don't think there is one single case in banking crisis history that this hasn't happened.

However, Foreign money (and there is quite a lot %wise) that stayed and are staying knew/know exactly their risk/reward ..they are not idiots ...the rest sadly are just the average Cyprus small business, investor/saver that will end up paying in full the price of the mismanagement of their banks ...

I agree.. It depends how much they're going to lose though.. If it's not too much, then it's a calculated move to make dirty money legal again, and they might even welcome what happened.

I simply don't agree with your assessment that leaving the money there is the better option. If your goal is to hid funds, and Cyprus is now not an option anymore, there are PLENTY of alternatives. People always only mention Switzerland, Cyprus and Liechtenstein...but there are tons of "safe" alternatives. Hell, ship it to Singapore

Also, just leaving your money in Cyprus doesn't suddenly make it "legit"...so that's not really a benefit.

As for EURUSD, I posted this yesterday...not going long until the 50% fib's clearly broken...especially given the resistance above.
