Metatrader 4 Build 600 - Where are my indicator & EA files ?


The latest version of MetaTrader 4 now saves your expert advisors, indicators, profiles, etc. in a different location on your computer. If you do not see your EAs and indicators in the navigator folder, your MT4 files are most likely still saved in the old folder location and are not recognized by the new version build of MT4.


1. Find where you have your MT4 files saved currently. Below are the file types and location where these files may be currently saved on your Computer. You may also want to check your desktop or downloads folders to see if you have copies of these files saved there.

2. Open MT4 > click on File > Open data folder > then double click the MQL4 folder. This will show you where your experts, indicators, etc. should be saved on your computer. Unless you have UAC settings disabled the folder location will be C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\MetaQuotes\Terminal\[32 character long MT4 ID]\MQL4

3. Copy the files from the old location to the new location. For your EA's, for example, you will copy the contents of the C:\Program Files (x86)\FXCM MetaTrader 4\experts folder to C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\MetaQuotes\Terminal\[32 character long MT4 ID]\MQL4\Experts

1. Open MT4 > go to File > Open data folder > double click on the MQL4 folder

2. Double click on the name of the expert advisor or indicator to open the file in MetaEditor.

3. If there are any errors when compiling the expert or indicator you will see those appear at the bottom of MetaEditor. You will need to address these errors before you are able to add the expert or indicator onto an MT4 chart.

Metatrader 4 Build 600 - Backing Up files


Please follow the instructions below to save backups for your MT4 files (expert advisors, indicators, libraries, templates, and profiles). It's often a good idea to save a backup before uninstalling/reinstalling MT4, transferring files to another installation of MT4, etc.


1. Create a New folder where you would like for your backup files to be saved. To create a new folder right click > go to New > click on Folder.

2. Navigate to where your where your MT4 files are saved on your computer. Depending on the build of MT4 you are using they could be saved in a couple of different locations.


a. Build 509 and Older: C:\Program Files (x86)\FXCM MetaTrader 4\experts

b. Build 600: Open MT4 > go to File > Open data folder > then double click on the MQL4 folder. Depending on your settings this may go to either folder location below.

i. C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\MetaQuotes\Terminal\[32 character long MT4 ID]\MQL4\Experts

ii. C:\Program Files (x86)\FXCM MetaTrader 4\MQL4


3. Copy the folders you would like to save and paste them into the 'New MT4 backup' folder.

Metatrader 4 - Insufficient Permission to Uninstall MT4 Platform


If you receive an error message when you are trying to uninstall MT4 stating you do not have sufficient privileges you will need to edit a value in your computer's registry.


1. Press Start then type in "regedit" and press enter. This will bring up your computer's registry.

2. Press ctrl + F and type in "EnableLUA". (You can also find this by going through the menu tree on the right.
You would need to go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Policies > System)

3. Double click on EnableLUA in the right side of the registry editor window.

4. Change the value data from 1 to 0 and press OK.

5. Close the registry editor window and 'restart' your computer. After you have restarted your computer, you will be able to uninstall MT4 though the task manager.

Hi All, I am having a huge problem since the upgrade this morning.

I do NOT trade with EA's or indicators at the moment, all is naked trading.

Problem is with the MT4 platform freezing up, i.e. price changes are not reflected, which is a great influence on trading, especially scalping. The problem is not my machine, brand new laptop and up until this morning I have not encountered this problem before. I have tested across 4 different broker platforms, one of which is a demo, and I experience the same across all 4.

Any help and or guidance on sorting this out soonest would be most appreciated.

Last week it was reported that the long awaited Build 600 for MetaTrader 4 was out. In it included two main features, the addition of the marketplace tab where users could purchase expert advisors (EA) and custom indicators directly from the platform, as well as an update to the MQL4 language that would make it more adaptable to MQL5 which is used by MetaTrader 5. For MetaQuotes, two important items were riding on the build update; the capture of additional MT4 third party product revenues, as well as creating a programming language that would become more compatible with MT5

MetaQuotes interest in being a bigger player of distribution of third party products built around MetaTrader 4 has been well documented over the last two years, as they have launched a Trading Signals marketplace, mobile apps, and one click trading, while simultaneously restricting brokers from using competing products on the grounds of “violating MT4 network’s protocols”.

While the addition of the marketplace tab brought the EA and indicator store closer to users, the biggest changes clients would experience with Build 600 was the update of the MQL4 code. As it was being slightly altered, EA and custom indicators creation would require following protocols of the new language. In advance of the changes, MetaQuotes had posted on its user forums documentation explaining the update as well as providing a solution for beta testing programs in the new environment. The company also announced to users that with the exception of a small percentage of cases, all previous EAs and indicators would continue to work correctly after the build as they stated “there is no need to worry about the operability of the previously developed trading robots and indicators, as the runtime environment copy of the previous MQL4 version is used to maintain compatibility. Thus, old EX4 files work correctly and exactly the same way as before.”

Most of the custom indicators i use don't work now, I have tried to compile them but all have various errors.

Is there anyway to download an old version of MT4 pre build 6 ??
Im having the same issue that my old indicators are appearing grey and incompatible - some are grey but are working,others not at all.if anyone knows someone who'd be very nice to re-code things for cheap OR find a broker that allows you to install the old version (508?) please let me know too.

Yes same, if they are ex4 they seem to work even if greyed out, but none of my MQL4 ones are working. I don't know difference between these formats but its bloody pain, will search later for an old mt4 setup file pre build 6

I, like many, am having trouble loading three indicators in MT4, Build 610.

I have tried everything I found on the internet to no avail.

Can anyone walk me through fixing this, or help me in any way.

If you are putting them in Broker's files\Experts\ indicators
they no longer go there
Broker's files\MQL4\ indicators

I did place three indicators I have been using in Broker's files\MQL4\ indicators.

Prior to that, I could not see them in the indicator folder.

Now, I do see them, but I can not drag or move them to any chart. Other indicators in that folder do move, but mine don’t.

Any ideas?

Did you put ex4 or mq4 files into the folder?
If you put mq4 files into the folder, they will re-compile when you re-start the platform and if they are not compatible with the new editor, they will not work.
I would advise that you ONLY put ex4 Files into the folder unless you are able to modify them yourself

Hi Gumrai,

Most of the files in the indicator folder are MQL4 source files. Some are EX4 files. Mine are MQL4 files. All, except my MQL4 files, transfer to a chart.

I don’t have equivalent EX4 files to match the ones I want.

It looks like, from this thread, I have to recompile my MQL4 files. I will try that and let you know how it works.
