The SNB talks tough on the Swissie

The new head of the Swiss National Bank Thomas Jordan last week gave one of the biggest hints since he was confirmed as the SNB President that the Bank could take further measures to stem Swissie strength when he said that the Swissie was still overvalued with EURCHF at 1.20. He also added that should the economic outlook and threat of deflation require it, the Bank would “at any time” take further measures to weaken the franc. However, Jordan didn’t elaborate on the type of measures the bank could take.

Jordan, speaking at the SNB shareholder meeting, said that the Swiss economic outlook remained challenging and that debt turmoil in Europe is the biggest risk. He referenced the EURCHF dip below the 1.20 floor earlier this month, but said it was due to market idiosyncrasies.

Although the leading economic indicator for Switzerland, known as the KOF, rose in April, it remains well below its historic average. We continue to believe that the weak inflation outlook is what could spur the SNB to action. It already expects inflation to decline 0.6% this year, so any further deterioration could spur action.

Traditionally the Swissie has been the ultimate safe haven and EURCHF would be expected to be bid during the Eurozone debt crisis, but the SNB floor has halted this. Now the safe haven of choice is the yen, and USDJPY managed to weaken on the back of the Spanish credit rating downgrade even though the Bank of Japan added another 10 trillion yen to the economy as part of its Asset Purchase Programme. Thus, if the SNB fails to react to stem Swissie strength going forward we could see a sharp weakening in EURCHF.

ZURICH, April 27 (Reuters) -Swiss National Bank Chairman Thomas Jordan said on Friday that negative interest rates to counter the strong Swiss franc were not introduced because the cap of 1.20 francs per euro was working well.

'We've done well with the cap,' Jordan told shareholders at the SNB's annual general meeting, in response to a question about whether negative interest rates might be more suitable than the cap in countering the strong franc.

'A different measure would also have unwanted side effects,' he said, reiterating what SNB policymakers said last year.

Negative interest rates on offshore deposits was one of the measures touted in the media and by some politicians last year after the franc surged nearly 20 percent against the euro in just a few months.

The SNB set the cap of 1.20 per euro on Sept. 6.

A central bank spokesman said no additional measures to enforce the cap were being excluded.

'It remains the case that the SNB is permanently looking at all measures needed for maintaining price stability and at the same time taking account of economic developments,' the spokesman said.

They are not broker... The exchange ratio is just like when you go to bank and you see on screen bid and ask with high spread. Thats why xe have 1.2053 exchange ratio like in local bank.

I'm with ActivTrades and they start at Sunday 11 p.m. and end at Friday at 11 p.m.

guys, i tell u every sunday, and u start it every sunday again and again...

pls understand it finally, xe.com data has nothing on brokers open/close prices.

u'll see today evening on start we'll open (almost) exactly on the same price as we closed on friday at most with 1-2-3 pips differences caused by australia/asia.

so pls, stop posting xe.com data as it has no impact on our trades.

So let all interested traders put whatever excites them be it chart,non-news or any youtube videos, funny pictures

than pls explain me how could we open always on the (exact) price we closed, when xe.com shows 20-30-50 pips difference at the same moment...im really excited, pls tell me!

what broker are u using xe is current price oanda should match it. Your broker is lying u can scalp for free money in that case. also what is spread of the pair u check?

i dont use oanda. apart from this, i really doubt oanda users will see 1.2090 or 1.21 (i dont remember which one was seen today on xe.com and posted by someone) when the market opens tonight.

plz gimme a tech explanation of a chart dosplaying price while keeping in mind spread. you will answer your own question. i didnt say u use oanda ur missing the point

Actually he is right, the price movements in weekend are pure bullshit.
However, one hour before sidney open there is what is called "pre market open", in such hour prices can move.
The premarket open is only 1 hour before the "real" market open, and when gap are experienced is because of movements happened during such premarket open.
Apart of this, i must agree with worsttrader, xe.com has proven to be bullshit, it's better to use oanda to track the price movements during premarket open.

Then i remember one time it was sunday and audjpy was moving big (i did made 50pips on sunday, lol), no premarket it was happening in the pure sunday evening (5-6 hours before market open), weird.

But don't worry eurchf will open exactly where it was at ny close, that pair is unable to move during the most busy market hours, it don't move when the snb speak, it don't move on nfp, not move on cci, it don't move if the 3° world war start. It will not move on weekend also
