Feel bad for those who handed over $100k.... Stupidity of their part? definitely. But it's still an awful thing for them to face.
Alarms bells should always ring for any investor when a manager of money offers guaranteed returns, particularly in the order of 30% p.a. If something sounds too good to be true, then it DEFINITELY is....
If you must invest your money with someone, rather than trade for yourself, then do plenty of research. Check their live account history, standard deviation of returns, maximum drawdowns and trade logs over a long time horizon. In short, question everything about them and their strategies, and insist they are fully licensed within their jurisdiction - this separates the men from the boys.
Only invest with a manager that operates via a broker which offers a managed account facility, as this prevents a manager from running off with your money, through only giving you authority to withdraw funds.
