Does it work ok with IBFX mini accounts?
The indicator plots on my other broker but not using IBFX mini. Currencies have prefixes like EURUSDm. Is this ok?
Yes - see example in post #72. Include the 'm' suffix when specifying the pairs in the param file.

Also, how many periods ago (NumPoints) do you find to be most successful? 15, 25, 100...
I use 15, but it depends on your trading strategy, and also how many timeframes you plot. For example, 15 points on a H4 plot is effectively plotting the same data as 60 points on a H1 plot (15x4=60x1).

I have an EA that I might be able to adapt to use this indicator but was wondering if the currency listing directly relates to the buffer info? (See pic)
Short answer is yes; actually it depends on the settings in the param file, e.g.

Also, consider setting OutputFile to a non-blank value, e.g. Strength.CSV
Then output will be sent to the file ...../experts/files/Strength.CSV
every RefreshEveryXMins minutes.
You can then have your EA read this file to get the values directly.

I have just come accross this thread and read it from start to finish. This approach has a lot of merit and I am just wondering why people have abandoned it. Can we restart discussions around this and try to finetune.

Maybe this is useful for you and forum.

Minimum time hour to read your chart is 1 hour.
Trade whatever we like (based on currency on your Recent Strength Indicator), but we shall trade the strong currency or the weakest currency (extremely strong against extremely weakest, because that is trending market, not sideways, and trending market more safety to trade then sideways).

Example:
if CAD is the weakest at 1 hour chart and JPY is the srongest at 1 hour chart, we short CAD/JPY

if AUD is the strongest at 4 hr chart and CAD is the weakest at 4 hr chart, we long AUD/CAD

What you're trying to work is recognizing recent trend from major and cross currency.

Thanks for the info. This is similar to the way that I use the indicator. I look to trade the strongest vs weakest as shown on the D1/H4 charts, along with the key S/R levels. Then I look for momentum candles on the lower TFs, and time entries and exits around S/R and only in the direction of the trend (established by strongest vs weakest).

I was just thinking about the automated presets

When looking for a fair weighting to create the line the comparison of the Aussie using these settings:
AUDUSD,100, AUDCAD,100, AUDCHF,100, AUDJPY,100, AUDNZD,100, EURAUD,100, GBPAUD,100

is only fair if the settings for the GBP can be:
GBPUSD,100, EURGBP,100, GBPAUD,100, GBPCAD,100, GBPCHF,100, GBPJPY,100, GBPNZD,100

and fair if the settings for the CHF can be:
USDCHF,100, AUDCHF,100, CADCHF,100, CHFJPY,100, EURCHF,100, GBPCHF,100, NZDCHF,100

Many brokers that I've demo-ed or my 2 live accounts that I trade, don't offer the pairs in bold above.

What I think this means for the indicator is that for the USD, because the pairs in bold (below) are normally offered the calculations will affect the USD strength or weakness. Hence, the USD strength / weakness will be over played when the commodity currencies of the NZD and AUD are moving together. Why? because the NZDCHF or the GBPNZD will not be moving the GBP or CHF strength measurement as they are not their for the calculation. However, the NZDUSD or NZDJPY will affect the strength calculation of the JPY or USD.

If the broker did not offer all of those than the index produced may be unfairly weighted towards the kiwi / australian strength or weakness:
EURUSD,100, AUDUSD,100, GBPUSD,100, NZDUSD,100, USDCAD,100, USDCHF,100, USDJPY,100

As a result, here are three sets of presets, using only:

First set are the majors only. When creating dollar indices normally these are only the only pairs used for analysis, as they make up about 80% of the world's traded volume: USD, JPY, EUR, GBP and CHF.
These are the pairs in this preset set:
EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY, USDCHF for the USD
GBPUSD, EURGBP, GBPJPY, GBPCHF, for the GBP
EURGBP, EURCHF, EURJPY, EURUSD for the EURO
USDCHF, GBPCHF, EURCHF, CHFJPY for the CHF

According to EURO Money magazine the AUD is traded as much as the CHF. But because the CHF has a stronger link to the USD and EUR it is normally considered the major in place of AUD. However, the AUD is the largest Asian commodity currency while the CHF is really the mini EURO. Because the CHF is a mini EURO when the EURO moves this affects the strength analysis 2 fold. Hence I would suggest that replacing the CHF with AUD or NZD would give a more balanced strength analysis. However AUD is traded 4 times more often than the NZD and as a result more brokers offer the pairs associated with the AUD.

Second set lot of presets, are the majors presets with AUD replacing the CHF. This also accounts for 80% of the world's traded volume, however, it replaces the mini euro (CHF) with largest commodity currency AUD. These are the pairs used, however, some brokers do not offer EURAUD or GBPAUD. If they don't then the settings would be unfairly weighted. If that is the case, it's probably best to use the majors settings (first set)above for the best analysis.
EURUSD, GBPUSD, AUDUSD, USDJPY for the USD
GBPUSD, EURGBP, GBPJPY, GBPAUD, for the GBP
EURGBP, EURAUD, EURJPY, EURUSD for the EUR

AUDUSD, GBPAUD, EURAUD, AUDJPY, AUDCHF for the AUD.

If you choose to use these presets just delete 1st, 2nd or 3rd off the end of the name before trying to use.

Many thanks for your contribution. I'm not sufficiently knowledgeable regarding volumes of currencies traded to be able to comment. Hence I've never known how to set the weightings properly. I'll download your Presets and have a look, as soon as I get some time (I'm currently working on enhancements to Recent SR, and developing another indicator also).

From my comments in post #20:
One final point. Remember that the plots are based on relative percentages, NOT pips. When viewed %-wise, the plots of the Asian pairs (esp JPY, and also NZD) tend to move in exaggerated fashion, relative to their 'pip potential', while EUR and CHF are understated. In other words, while the direction of the plot remains 100% good, you'll potentially gain just as many pips from a smaller move in EUR's or CHF's Relative Strength plot, as you would from a larger move in JPY's or NZD's plot. The next version of the indicator (due for release tomorrow) will include a ScaleFactor parameter, to which you can assign your own arbitrary values to correct this imbalance.

In other words, the ScaleFactor parameters probably need adjustment also.

Here's the problem, restated by using an example:
My broker's (GMT+2) Friday range (daily high to low) for NZDUSD was 126 pips, but when expressed as a percentage of the day's median price, it's 126 / 7263 = 1.73%

Friday range for EURUSD was 133 pips, or 133 / 14868 = 0.89%

So (assuming that USD was the only basis for aggregating the strength) the NZD strength curve will cover almost twice the ground (1.73 / 0.89) that the EUR curve will, yet there's the almost the same potential to harvest pips (126 vs 133) from them both.

At some point I will try to fix the indicator so that its basis is pips rather than percentages (or at least make 'pips' an option), but I'll need to somehow find a common denominator when summing/averaging the changes in pips across each constituent currency, i.e. NZD is a weighted average of NZDUSD + AUDNZD + EURNZD + GBPNZD + NZDJPY etc. In the mean time it's a case of manually placing one's own estimated values into the Scale Factors.

Hope this makes sense.

My idea was based more around that not all brokers offer the pairs needed to make a cross comparison, rather than, looking at volume on a pair by pair basis.
However, I know that volume analysis is normally used and is useful. However, volume of a pair might be a greater or lesser determinant of a currency's index strength but maybe not proportional. That is, just because the EURUSD is 15 times the volume of AUDUSD, does not necessarily mean that the EUR should be 15 times greater in its contribution to the index strength.

I would have thought that it is not pips you are after, but dollars per pip movement. As the EURGBP is worth $14USD per pip, while the EURNZD is worth about $5.50 per pip. Hence, an 11 pip movement on the EURGBP, would be roughly equivlanet to a 28 pip movement on the EURNZD, when measuring a currencies performance / strength, and this idea would still allow for your above example to be true. I believe that this is the reason why the AUD and NZD sometimes appear to be the weakest or strongest very quickly, while the EUR and USD are a little more consistent.

thanks for the indi. Hope u don't mind the same 'ol same 'ol, but I too am trying to put this on an IBFX mini(w/the m suffix) and still cannot get it to show up. Any ideas what I might be doing wrong. I have loaded the TXT files in the "expert files" folder and changed the parameters to "m" in the inputs and still no luck. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I guess that you've worked through the posts in this thread.

Please post a list of all symbols offered by your broker.
e.g. GBPUSDm, EURUSDm, etc
You can obtain these from the Market Watch window (press Ctrl-M).
Correct spelling and capitalization is vital.

I will then reply with an attached parameter file that should work for you.

Also, if you post the web address of your broker, I will download their MT4 platform and ensure that the parameter file works for me, before I post it.

BTW, I am running MT4 build 225 (10 July 2009) as supplied by http://www.gomarketsaus.com/
My Windows is XP Home Edition version 2002 Service Pack 2.
The indicator works fine for me on this configuration.

tried that one and still no luck. tried changing the parameters to include the "m" and still nothing. the acct I have w/IBFX is demo and does include the "m". can't remember if you have to select one or the other, but it's there.

I believe I've located the problem. I was converting the currency pair names to uppercase, in case somebody typed 'eurusd' instead of 'EURUSD', but alas, the 'm' in EURUSDm was getting converted to uppercase also (EURUSDM). Hence the indicator was not recognizing the currency pair.

The attached fix should work for you (download it into the ...../experts/indicators folder, overwriting the previous version). I finally managed to find an IBFX account type that used minis. The screenshot below shows the result after I compiled the fix, removed the old indicator, restarted MT4, attached the new one, and waited 5-10 mins for the indicator to gather the necessary data, during which time the lines slowly appeared. This account does use 5/3 decimals, but the fact that yours is 4/2 shouldn't make a difference.

Many thanks for your help in fixing this bug. I apologize for any inconvenience. Hopefully you will find the indicator as useful as I do.

This can now be downloaded from post #1.

The bug described in post #97 has been fixed, and a MT4 script is now available to automatically determine which pairs your broker is offering, and build your parameter file (Presets----Recent Strength.TXT) accordingly.
