How do you "read" this oscillator? Is it suggesting that volumes are highest at the extremes of its swings, or that they are weakest at these extremes, or that they are strongest at the tops and weakest at the bottoms......????????

Well, I read and re-read the article....all of it. But nowhere does it say specifically how to "read" the oscillator line! What does it mean when it peaks up.....peaks down.....is near center....?????????

It is basically a volume indicator.
When it crosses zero there is more buying volume than selling volume.
In the trade above, I was just using the divergence between the volume and the PA.

As the trend on this pair has been up on all major TF today, it was a sitting duck.
Just like USD/CHF is going to be a sitting duck come the London open. HOPEFULLY!

Indeed...
among others, Volume &/or divergence from oscillators such as Trix & CCI in your chart (as well as Stoch, MACD, RSI, etc) can alert us of PA's real direction & hence, if a Head fake will occur or not.
Indeed, the Trix & CCI in your chart are showing bearish divergences.. which may mean we may be in for a head fake soon.

I have shunned the Accumulation/Distribution indicators because they, as is therefore the Chaikin Oscillator, are based upon an erroneous assumption.....that being that they can assume, based upon risingfalling close/open prices and rising/falling volume, whether there was a predominance of buying or selling during the timeframe. It is a ridiculous assumption. Many times I have noticed heavy volume at the low of a timeframe and then a spike up on low volume to close at a new high, a condition in which they would assume buying. But, in fact it was heavy selling and then a 'head fake up', if you will, on low volume to make the tall green candle and heavy overall volume appear as buying.....and confirmed by a subsequent heavy dive, dive, dive! The ONLY sure way to consistently know, in fact, whether there was more buying than selling, or visa vera, is to know the actual count of trades/volumes of each catagory as they go thru the system.....data that is unavailable to us in forex as well as in the stock market (although I imagine that in the stock market, that data is available to certain "qualified" large brokerages, Mutual funds, and hedge funds).

It is funny but after what Sonic said in his last post, it was much easier to identify the USD/GBP entry on the M5 than either the M15 or H1.

I guess that we can only understand these things with a little Zen whack on the back of the head!

You are using the NOV indicator so just compare the two indicators.
I personally find the NOV indicator confusing because it is simply not directional and has me going in both directions at the same time.

Note how the Chaikin oscillator shows us divergence at critical areas whereas the NOV does not.

It is just a case of, different folks different strokes.

Yes, to each his own.
But i think it's fairly incorrect &/or unfair to say that NOV, or any volume indicator for that matter, is/are confusing, not directional. Volume indicators are directional. they just need more interpretation (& experience) for u to gain insight from them, compared to oscillators that point-blank show/tell u the direction (up, down, o/bought, o/sold).
& also, Volume indicators show divergence too.

Just FYI, so u wont think i'm biased, i'm using (& still learning to use; learning is endless) volume indicators. I'm not using NOV, but i plan to check up on it soon.

If you post the indy, I will compare. But from the chart your posted, look at the next to last NVO relative volume hit, was buying that turned the PA back upwards. Chaikin was below axis and therefore indicated selling. Then look at last NVO relative volume hit....was as the PA went up to highs and quickly dropped from there. Was a pump to sell off at the highs, but Chaikin was above axis and therefore indicated it was buying!

Edit: Ok, got the indy. Thanks. Will start comparing......but please continue to post your insights using this tool, as I am new to it.

And, just why would it be unfair for ME to say NOV is confusing for ME personally after trying to use it? Isn't this a personal decision to be made?

There is a lot going on the charts, watching PA, trend tunnel, MA etc, I just need one less thing to focus on and have me standing on my head to try to think which way the volume is moving.

Hey, I don't care if nobody else on the planet likes this indicator, I DO!!!!!!!

Anyone else of the opinion that we are seeing a fake out on USD/CHF right now? The trend is strongly down on all major TF.

but if u read that whole sentence, in context, u were generalizing that NVO is not directional.
traderathome can interpret NVO, u can't. the same way that u can interpret Chaikin & he can't.
if NVO was not directional (literally &/or figuratively speaking), what's the point of him using it, right?

like i said, i'm not versed with NVO. maybe traderathome can point out "directionals" &/or divergences via NVO on the chart you posted here (containing the above quote).

we just have to note that there are many readers here, & some might take your above insight at face value and/or miscontrue it & "spread the word", so to speak. that is my only concern. nothing more, nothing less.
so, there's definitely no need for "!!!!!!!!!!" in your post.
I have been gentle, so i expect u to behave the same.

Rastaman, I set up NVO to not show the 'below average' volumes, which gives it a level base. Then I 'dragged and dropped' the CHO indy on top of it. This way of setting up the two studies easily allows interpretation of whether the NVO relative volume spikes are 'buying or selling' as however the CHO is indicating at the same time. This should be interesting. You might try it too. The two together this way may become more revealing. Let's see........

Edit: Added second chart in which the yellow bars were changed to the same color as the 'below avg' bars, to make them less distinguishable and therefore, make the higher volume graduation colors more outstanding. Just an example of a way to tweek the NVO indy.

I did that yesterday and sort of got fed up with it.
I agree, it is an interesting idea though.
