UK ECON: UK Consumer Confidence At Its Lowest Since March 2003

London November 30 UK consumer confidence fell to its lowest level for
nearly five years during November as soaring petrol prices and the prospect of
higher mortgage costs took their toll. In its monthly survey, Gfk/NOP said its
headline consumer confidence index fell to -10 from -8 in October.
Notably the survey found that people's expectations for their personal
financial situation over the next 12 months fell to +9 from +13, the lowest
since January. Their assessment of their situation over the last year also fell,
dropping to -10 from -8 last month. People's view of the wider general economic
situation over the last 12 months was also down, falling to -32 from -30.
Looking ahead, expectations for the economy over the year ahead have also fallen
with the sub-index dropping to -21 from -17.
Meanwhile consumers' willingness to make major purchases remains at its
lowest level since December 1995, with the sub-index falling to -7 from -5 in
October. "With petrol prices racing past 1 stg a litre, food prices on the
increase and the prospect of higher mortgages and loan fees on the horizon
resulting from the credit-crunch, even the most optimistic seem to view their
glass as 'half empty'," said Gfk/NOP spokesman Rachael Joy.
The "now is a good time to save" index was also down from October, falling

GBP/USD: Remains on the Front-Foot Despite Soft GfK Number London, November 30. Cable is currently trading one tenth-of-a-cent below its intra-day high of 2.0700, having shrugged off November"s disappointing GfK UK consumer confidence gauge ( More). Some buy stops reportedly reside above 2.0700. A large 2.0700 option strike rolls off at today"s 15:00GMT NY cut (alongside 2.0600 and 2.0620 strikes). Above-figure offers are touted at 2.0720.

GBP/USD TECHS: Fibo Retracements Key To Further Gains London, November 30. Since bouncing out of 2.0595 yesterday GBP/USD has continued to head higher. Intraday price has taken out the 38.2% Fibonacci level (of the 2.0835/2.0595 fall) at 2.0685 and now eyes the next retracement at 2.0715. In the bigger picture the pair is supported above the daily uptrend line from 1.9655 which now comes in at 2.0460. While price holds above here GBP longs are favored in spite of mixed daily trend studies. A break above the aforementioned 2.0835 high from Wednesday would reinforce a return to higher levels. This high is just shy of the 61.8% fibo at 2.0850 of the fall from 2.1160 highs which was a 26 year high on November 9th. A break of 2.0850 opens the way for a full retracement.
