I'm sitting in the middle of the desert (ok, the outskirts of it, technically, but it's 'outskirts' for thousands of miles), 20 or so kilometers from Saudi border, in an internet cafe.
We have no viable internet at the hotel we're staying at (another 10 minutes in, and about 40 minutes from town I'm working at), and it took me 3 trips down to this teeny little desert oasis center to actually get online. No woman is ever seen in town, and particularly not one not fully covered (talking full-on veil over face).
First trip down was just a quick walk from one end to the other, to make an appearance; enter into the internet cafe, wait for the lower jaws to reattach to upper jaws, smile, pretend to look around, nod, exit.
(next day at the petrol station, the attendant said 'you were in town last night?' - apparently, the word spread like a wild fire)
Second day, a bit longer, enter stores, buy gum, speak to the net cafe owner (or attempt to, as he speaks no English). Find out price and working hours (till 3am!!!)
Third day, go back in, ask the owner if it's ok to bring my laptop (took about 10 minutes to get the message across), tell him I'd be back today. Make a point of buying things at various shops (can opener, a fork, more gum, all the random things I don't need, but just to start getting them used to me), and eat at a restaurant - this was so traumatic to them, that a bunch of men stood outside and dared not enter. (note to self - the cause was worth it, but must not do that to my virginal stomach again - if I can't pronounce it or clearly recognize it, I should not eat it)
Finally, today, come down in daylight hours and get online.
Next step - come down in the evening.
Finally - come down in the middle of the night and stay till they kick me out.

Anyhow... I know you guys have missed me.
I also hope you've been making major pips, as my inability to get online and try to make some money can only mean one thing - great cable movements and everyone making a bunch

I will give you fair warning before I move into my permanent residency and can get my own DSL, so you can deal with your positions accordingly :

ps: I have NO idea where cable is at right now - could be at $3, could be at $1.5. I don't actually think I want to check
