On May 2nd, China’s commerce ministry issued an order, the first of its kind, stating that China shall not recognise or enforce sanctions imposed by the United States. Not a leak. Not a rumour. An official fucking ministerial order.

China is now legally instructing its companies to ignore Washington’s sanctions regime and keep trading with whoever the fuck they want, including Iran.

China is a key customer for Iranian oil, defying sanctions imposed by the United States. The talks come as Washington calls on China to put pressure on Araghchi to loosen Tehran’s chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz.

Donald Trump has changed international norms, and China is now really leaning into this situation and taking a page out of his book by encouraging Chinese companies to defy international sanctions. Beijing has really set a precedent that could change how global trade look like in the future.

You can’t spend two terms tearing up trade deals, weaponising tariffs against your own allies, ignoring the WTO, threatening Greenland, threatening Panama, threatening Canada, threatening the bloody Pope, and then act surprised when the rest of the planet decides the rules-based international order is a buffet, not a contract. Trump rewrote the rules.

Meanwhile, Project Freedom, the most embarrassingly named military adventure since Operation Just Cause, is paused. For how long? Nobody knows. Including Donald.
