Hi man. I'll share my thoughts, even if I know some aspects were already touched by other members' replies. I'll try to be short:

- first of all, for context, I trade intraday, scalp, swing etc. I very rarely keep opened positions over night. I admire your patience to keep a trade running for 1 month or more...look at last August, the markets stayed confined in a range of 150 pips and then there were some massive moves up and down...that's too much for me

- i dont think your long term strategy is suitable for prop firms challenge; they want short term profits (big profits) with low DD and many other conditions; in my opinion the intraday traders have more chances to succeed

- regarding the stop loss placement: I dont use a stop loss, because I want to avoid the spikes and other brokers' tricks. But I monitor the price behavior and if I notice the price really goes against me, I close the trade with a loss without hesitation. Of course on some occasions the price returns to my initial direction, but from my experience these are rare cases, so why should I keep the trade opened based on hope? The thing is that watching the 1 min chart for some time I developed a sense of feeling the market which allows me to cut the losses short and to add to winning positions. Now, why am i telling you this? Because we all know the market is fractal. So you should develop a similar skill of understanding when the market is clearly going against you and at that point close the position with a loss. So that's it...no hard stop loss based on last swing high, last swing low, fixed amount of money, percentage of the account etc., but rather based on price action. I really dont know how long you would need to accomplish that, having in mind that you trade on time frames such as daily and above...

Hopefully I made myself clear. It is Saturday evening after all...

PS if you want i can expand on why placing a stop loss above or below the last swing high/low is such a tricky thing.

Agree, this is why I take partial and re add back when the market allows us to, because we cannot know the reward beforehand. We may set a target, but that doesnot meant it "will" hit.
Or Just because we risk 1% of our capital, does not meant the market should give us 2% of our capital.

We are not a tree, every component in trading is flexible, we can change it at anytime to increase our odd of success.
Like Mark Douglass put it, every tic up or down is an opportunity for you to do something for your best interest.

The idea that price movement is not yet done or "there is room to more rise or more fall," I use magnet of the chart which attract price to it + fundamentals reason to why the currency might go there / why it nay not go there. I try to assess which event is more probable.

This increase my RR - varies from 1:2.5 to 1:4 - but i always play the game by taking some money out of the table, re assess the structure, re-add back if structure not yet broken,

My risk reward is not 100 pip SL or 200 Pip TP! Also, i used my SL as a hard stop, but my Invalidation level decided if will hold the trades or close it, with the decision purely based on how PA flirts with my invalidation level. If i'm infront of my screen, i'm out on 10-15pip else the hard stop get hit at 2x ATR (1hr)
More time in the market, does not mean you trade better!

To add to that:

If I would position trade then:
1. bullish market I would start adding positions below 4h swing. Add every 20 pip layer
2. bearish market swing highs with same logic.

Use round numbers to add layers for example. .100 .500 are great.

Dave, the profit factor is accurate and doesn't allow anyone to manipulate R:R ratio. Yes, R:R is meaningless.

When evaluating trading strategies we are helped by many different types of measures of a strategy’s performance. One of the most common ones is profit factor.
The profit factor simply is the ratio between gross profits and gross losses. This means that a strategy that lost $200 but won $400 will have a profit factor of two. In trading, it’s essential to ensure that you have a profit factor that isn’t too low, in order to leave room for strategy degradation, which is inevitable.

Ok, so why would a long term strategy not be suitable for a prop firm challenge when they offer long term strategies?. Can you please elaborate.

Sure. First of all, what is the goal of these prop firms:

A. to make money from fees
B. to identify top traders capable of making good returns
C. a combination of A and B?

I say it is A, but for the sake of argument, let's pretend is C, meaning that they want to make money from fees and to identify top traders to invest in. Now, assuming that you are a prop firm and you have 10 mil to fund the accounts of these top traders, what type a traders would you fund: short term traders which could generate 5-10% a month or the long term traders generating 10-20% a year? The answer is obvious.

But before expanding further, can you give me a clear example of "a prop firm challenge for long term strategies"?

dempire1, explore the ATR topic. It's the simplest quantitative analysis but very effective. If you checked my charts, you know I use 100. 120. 150% daily values to establish the area for possible exhaustion level. I combine ATR with the other methods (range ext. and the end of HP or EW patterns). I discussed the subject on Aug. 10 with a friend of mine using the trades in micro ES.

btw HRT is just the computer age name for frontrunning of olden days LOL

Well pardon my lack of knowledge then. I have no clue with these prop firms and read somewhere that you can hold trades over weekends. I obviously got the wrong end of the stick. So I take it that it is for scalpers only. My bad. Sorry.

hi man. no worries. i am not an expert in prop firms myself. there are other members here with a lot of experience, who can share their view. for instance i noticed a trader, navk or similar, who earns a new prop account each week or so...this is the type of trader who can issue a relevant opinion about prop firms.

I heard few HFT's running on 90% +strike rate which belongs to sylican valley.
Also I witnessed minimal dd of 4 ticks in futures trading.
And 100% winrates belongs to scammers.
