Again, this is not a hedge. This is LITERALLY closing out your position if you do the opposite trade with identical size and instrument. Why would anyone EVER open a an extra position in the opposite direction and pay double the spread and margin just to have zero market exposure ??

yeah, sometimes i call out stupidity when i see it. But i get your point, i should not do that. Brokers allow this kind of "hedging accounts" because this is literally free money to them.

Hedging REAL definition is that there is some DIFFERENT characteristics of the other trade. For example, i am long stocks but i'm afraid that the market will fall the next month. So, i buy a put option instead of closing that trade. Cause if i'm wrong and market keeps rising then i'm only losing the premium and still gain from that long stock. The result is different from that if i had simply opened an offsetting short trade.

Wrong, a farmer should never stop doing what he's main job is, he should buy a put option to hedge the downside risk. I mean, what if he is wrong, think how stupid he would have been not to do his job and grow potatoes. But i agree, it all comes down whether he is smart enough to do real hedging in the first place. Farmers that i know, always hedge the way i'm describing. They have workers who need salaries and he can't just stop his business, now can he?

Let me tell you why. Because most traders are emotionally not willing to close (accept) a losing trade. And brokers know that. So, they offer this kind of trading accounts because it makes them extra free money through spread/commissions.

Part 1. The buy and sell margin is offset not increased.
Part 2. You do pay double the fees if your account pays fees or suffers the spread 2x on both transactions.
Part 3. I attempted to explain opening buy and sell transactions and closing these transactions but you obviously didn't get it.
Part 4 if you took the time to follow the posts of some who have been successful, you would obviously learn something new but again you apparently aren't interested.

I did politely attempt to explain it.
