Factual

The UK holds less than $100 bn in net FX reserves.
That's roughly 3% of GDP.

For comparison:
- Japan: ~20% of GDP
- Switzerland: ~115% of GDP

Seriously, I don't know how much BoE will do in ''defending'' the Sterling.

BoE options:
1) Say & do nothing - looks clueless/ asleep at the wheel
2) Say something but do nothing - looks toothless
3) Do something small (50bps) - mkt will push you to do more, perhaps quickly
4) Do something big - if this doesn't work, you are in a worse position than (1)

Waiting for BoE to say something....
('I get the impression both the Treasury and the Bank of England are nervous behind the scenes'.)

I'm not sure they will try to defend it by direct intervention in the fx markets,? (Black Weds anybody re 1992 and Uk dropping out the ERM.) More likely a rate hike and a statement to sure up market confidence if anything at all. Truss/Kwarteng seeing what happens when you make idiotic statements - the market on whom they depend for their borrowings soon sees thru them. I bet the hotline between Uk Govt Treasury and supposedly independent Boe has been busy this morning. I wonder how much political pressure on Boe is going on after Kwartengs 'Boe independence is sacrosanct' comment last week. lol!
