Yes, it's true.......
"Traders will never know the beginning of a trend"
They only get to see it when it has only started trending.
In my humble opinion, its not being on the wrong side of price that kills but money management.
I have been long bias since 31st of August and since then have danced with the price down to drawdown of about 10%. My pain threshold is a lot more.
I trade daily chart but I manage my position mostly on 1h chart and trade 5m chart when the opportunity present itself and I feel I have time and energy.
