Right no problem, but you didn't answer me a question and I'm curious about it. why do you show daytrade list being you a swing trader.

This is that trade from the other day on my demo account (sigh) there was definitely an element of luck as I entered too early, however this is a pattern I have seen many times and have spent countless hours staring at volume bars and comparing them to price action.

More than any other application I use volume when scalping to identify buying/sellling climaxes, usually on the m5 chart with reference to higher TF structure.
Volume is different from session to session so it is important to do an apples to apples comparison, within the session the volume may change and that can indicate a change of direction or move from or into a range. Ranges are usually low volume, the beginning of an impulsive move is nearly always high volume, unless it is a trap move, and pullbacks are lower volume. However this is not always the case, and can be an early warning that something is up - then it is a process of elimination and discovery to work out what and whether you can profit or fall foul from it.

Hopefully the image conveys what volume price analysis is about; it would take me far too long to describe and would no doubt annoy people. Anna Coulling has written some great books about it if you want to know more. In short I look at the candle wicks, direction, body of candle - large or small - and then the volume (is it low, average, high, or super high) to validate these elements or highlight anomalies, such as small candles with high volume or large candles with low volume. Ultimately it is about gauging the strength and momentum, or weakness, of each candle and each group or pattern of candles. I always want to be trading with the market. Volume Price Analysis really originated with Wyckoff and his laws of cause and effect and the law of effort vs. result. Also ties in with the law of supply and demand. Hope this makes sense!

I've actually never checked out any of the literature on trading theory - I will maybe check one of those books out

This was the same entry I believe can't remember if I posted it

Was just a case of having the level marked out (untested powerful demand zone from feb), waiting for the first surge then entering when it touched down again, trade of the week for sure unless something exceptional happens

That's awesome! I must learn more about supply and demand, it complements what I do perfectly. I live by the 2nd and 3rd law but not the first?!
Yeah you did post it 20/07 2.25pm - it was a very nice trade!


Like anything volume takes time to incorporate successfully, it can be noise, it certainly isn't the holy grail, but it does have its uses and can be very powerful, because unlike most indicators which lag behind price volume is a leading indicator. All the best!
