Hi,

Thank you.

This strategy is one I actually used years ago with good results but I moved on to design something else once I got attracted to shorter timescale trading (I originally only used Daylight on 15m timeframe).

Recently I decided to dig it out and check if it still works. As we know, market conditions change and what worked once might not work now. Thankfully, it still performed well.

Since I've been able to take a look at it with fresh eyes (and more experience under my belt) I have seen the potential for slightly different approaches. Hence the aggressive version. The basic framework is such that it's quite straightforward to make small amendments and provide traders with more than one option.

I will continue my research, using different timescales etc, but so far I'm comfortable that both the original version and the aggressive version are suitable for a few timescales.

I want to use yesterday's action on GU to highlight why shorter timeframes can be tricky. I know a lot of people are drawn to 1m or 5m charts but hopefully these examples will show why it's sometimes optimal to stick to 15m at lowest.

Let's first look at the 15m charts for both standard and aggressive modes:

As you can see, it wouldn't have mattered whether you chose standard or aggressive as both would have rewarded you with around 40 pips profit during the London session.

Now let's look at the same period of time on 5m charts, both standard and aggressive:

Much trickier, right?

I completely understand the desire to trade short timeframes and, for certain faster moving instruments, it can be lucrative. But, for the majority of currencies, I find that Daylight generally performs best when using 15m at lowest.

That's not to say 5m doesn't occasionally have its place with currencies though. Some days the trends and reversals will be such that 5m captures the moves perfectly. But other days it will drag you in and out of positions that result in frustrating small wins or losses.

The thing to keep in mind about Daylight is that it thrives during trends. An instrument will generally display trending behaviour on at least one timeframe. The key is finding that timeframe and trading it.

Thank you Laura for your outstanding contribution and ideas.

I have further developed the use of Wlliams% MA. Have backtested some pairs, with promising results. Also, demo traded with great success.
Pay close attention to the picture i have made. Study all details especially how Williams % top and bottom for swing high and low. Manualy make a line top and bottom for the average of Williams%. This is your swing high and low.
Trade only in the trend direction (Black Line) Yellow line is very important and is used in multiple ways. StochRSI is the trigger and must meet in line with Yellow line. Converge in the trend direction, Bump the same as pullback.
Back test your self before using this strategy, and watch the behaviour of yellow line ( Williams%) Study every scenario. And remember every pair is different.
Price action and liquidity is giving you the clues. The strategy is the confirmation.

Meanwhile, trading Dow on 5m in aggressive mode would have delivered handsome rewards yesterday.

Hi. I hate stealing others ideas and have no intention in making a new thread. But you should seriously dig in the details. I won't comment further of my strategy.

Whether you're using the standard version or aggressive version, and regardless of which timeframe you are trading, I want to take a moment to highlight the importance of daylight existing in the sub-window. During any move, there will be 'shake-outs' - counter moves designed to shake market participants (who have chosen the direction correctly) out of their positions. Daylight won't be able to eradicate those shake-outs completely, but it certainly can help. Below I've marked up some charts where participants would possibly have been shaken out...

Laura don't you find M5 too noisy with many false signals?

Depends on the instrument (and to some degree current market conditions).

For example, I'd recommend not trading currencies on anything lower than 15m most of the time. However, there are times when a 5m currency chart will offer advantages in terms of speed of signals. In heavily trending days especially. But yes, overall, 5m will mostly lead to frustration.

When it comes to trading indices, oil or gold though, 5m can work pretty well.

Often it's best to look at what came before. I usually start with a 15m chart and work from there. I look at the last day or so of price action and make a judgement on whether I can trade that type of action if it repeats. I guess with experience you learn whether to go up or down a timeframe.

She gave you the best advice money can't buy and you should have very utmost respect for her thread, all that has been combined into a trading system and the choice of indicators, she deserves an achievement award in this field of education from FF.I always read everything here but comment on very few posts, because her explanations are extremely so clear, very rare I will have ever questions any of her charts. One simple thing to do is just follow, practice, practice, practice.Keep up your good work Laura.

Your chart reminds me of a point I haven't made yet.

There will be times in aggressive mode, as in your highlighted area, where daylight occurs before we get price closing on the correct side of the channel.

It's perfectly fine to take a chance on entering before the bar closes if it seems fairly obvious the bar is going to close on the correct side. In your example, we got the huge bar up on the hourly. Had we taken a chance and entered 15 minutes before the bar closed, we would have got in at 8 pips lower than waiting for the hourly bar to close. 8 pips won't seem like much of a payoff for taking a chance early but over the course of a week or month of trading it will add up to something worthwhile.

To be clear though, I'm only referring to cases where it seems fairly obvious the bar is going to close on the correct side of the channel. I definitely don't advise gambling on a marginal bar that could still close either side.

I've been pretty impressed with the Aggressive version of the Daylight strategy this past week so I modified an existing indicator to generate an arrow the first time a candle closes above, or below, the
5 SMMA high/low channel and I want to share it with you all. It should work on any timeframe, any currency pair.

Just want to say looks like a promising system and thanks to LauraT! I have one question though and I apologize if already discussed. Do you recommend entering on the first candle close outside of the bands or ma's? OR are you guys waiting for a candle close then another entire candle to open and close outside of the band/ ma before entering?
