I loved reading your book and some nice info in there

Why did you keep making changes after all the manual backtesting what your great friend did? must be mad lol

when i got to the final strat info i was really shocked lol

Seems greed, emotion, fear and whatever really got to you all at times to keep from what you already knew

I think the biggest mistake you made was putting a timeline on it mate

Want to start a new era with my thoughts or as were both in UK meet up for a beer sometime, thx for the read

Biggest mistake was way over confident - we just thought it couldnt lose and would always come back. we over leveraged to the hilt.

I wouldnt trade like that again - i don't like any losing trades at all anymore

oh, and my great friend tested any changes too but not as intense - we were of course curve fitting after a certain point. We didnt lose from it, ended up with several tens of thousands off it but me and the wife were driving around picking out million pound houses to buy for the end of year three. it really was a grieving process because it was like i lost something we already had in our minds.

when it was coming with the t-shirts i was totally different - just worked like hell 16 hours a day for 7 days a week 364 a year for 3 years, didnt even think of spending it till we had double what i wanted for something. lessons were def learned from grail.

Biggest lesson though was when you have something good - batter the f&*^cker - don't hold back because tomorrow it could be gone.

I might give this a try for a week or so, with these adjustments, from the open of the day, round the open to the nearest quarter

So today, open about 1.3650, Long entry 1.3675, take profit at close or 1.3875

I wish I was able to backtest, I would run a few GBP pairs thoroughly.

Only need a few trending days to get ahead, or even if a day reverses hard the other way, possible to break even.

Knock yourself out mate. I still have the robot around somewhere but i wouldnt touch it with a barge pole. after the boom one of the team spent about a year trying to get paramenters that would have been profitable. he failed

Just one question, when you developed your system did you look at just one pair with an optimised entry for the "perfect" trade or were you looking for a more generalised system that would be capable of trading on multiple pairs/instruments. I seem to go round in circles with this one.

Thing is though you know what killed any of my trading in my years inbetween? - trading multiple pairs. it's a mistake because all pairs are correlated so when you lose you lose on almost everything. the reason we look at other pairs is because we THINK we are spreading the risk or we THINK we will make more money.

Truth is it increases your risk and if you want to make more money then use bigger lots.

I only trade one pair at a time now wheras i used to trade lots of pairs I also go for smaller targets now wheras before i was a home run guy

Thankyou for the link you posted. I read your Grail book from it. It reminded me of an experience I was close to. My last 'employed' job was as a globalmacro trader @ a hedge fund trading most asset classes to express any themes we agreed had a good chance of playing out in the medium term (3-6mths for us then.) As my role developed I tended to specialise in FX and equities to express those ideas and had an interest in TA so could mostly get good entry prices when we were building a position. For eg if we wanted to go short on china, we'd short Japanese steel stocks because then 80% of their steel exports were to china etc etc..

Anyways, we always had to run our trade ideas past the 'quants' who were riding high on an algorithm they had developed that had returned 96% the year before so the senior partners thought they were gods...It was like yours, a b/o thing and despite our warnings (ie the 'real' traders) they, high on the fumes of an annual 96% return, and carried on into a 2nd year, where it lost 68%. In the post-mortem that followed that loss their conclusion was that they weren't being aggressive enough so for the third year they ran it they decided to commit more margin to it and increase the leverage from that new total margin, which was patently not the post-mortem findings from the rest of us lol ! You can guess the rest, in the first 6mths of that third and last year they ran it it lost 113% in the 1st 6mths, and then they stopped. So over 2.5years it was net 85% down in % terms but more than that in $ terms as they had increased the funds committed to it - so what that was in 'real' % terms I never got to find out as I left the fund that same year to start on my own. My conclusion was and remains the same, most 1st b/o's are false and in ranging markets you'll get shafted. There is only one guy I know that still works at the fund (although it effectively got swallowed up by another bigger fund so isn't the same now as when I was there,) and he said to this day they still haven't come up with anything along those lines that works, despite having some of the best brains on it, and unlimited resources/computing power.

That's a great point and infact the mistake that LTCM (that you refer to in the opening pages of your book,) made. They thought they were 'hedged' re risk but despite placing trades on multiple markets - when the brown sticky stuff hit the fan it became clear that they had placed the same trade over and over again. As you said, all markets are correlated in one way or another so if you wanna make more money, trade bigger amounts on the instrument you know best, and this does not necessarily mean increasing leverage.
