Do you mean ISIS who were trying to build a Caliphate from the Euphrates to the Tigris. Not much point getting everyone to commit suicide if you also want them to build a new homeland is there?
As an aside I know of another group who want to build a new state from the Euphrates to the Nile - co-incidence??

Remembrance is a fine and noble thing to do but we should also remember the mistakes we made and try not to repeat them.

Unfortunaley we never learn the lessons of history and are doomed to keep repeating them.

Ok again agree with much of that except for the point that we are beyond the pale. Obviously I understand the numbers game and have banged on about it for a long time but I still have glimmer of hope that we can turn things round by at the very least dealing with the elephant in the room and obviously this will never be done by the voting of any political party but it could be done by militia and disillusioned military personnel to which I believe the numbers are growing at a rate of knots. Basically civil war and winner takes all.

If we really are "doomed to keep repeating them", then it wouldn't do much good to "remember the mistakes we made and try not to repeat them". We would keep on repeating them no matter how much we reminded ourselves.

But if there is a reasonable chance we can learn from our past mistakes, then it becomes useful to remember them. I tend to think we're not doomed.

America(and UK) have been sending their young men off to die in pointless wars since US Independence - The main reason for that IMHO is that war is Big business and it makes a lot of money for the bankers(All wars are bankers wars(google it))
This will not change until we change our financial system of fractional reserve banking and that won't/can't happen anytime soon(JMHO again).

Wars have been going on since long before the US independence. The world has been shaped by conquests for thousands of years. With or without banks, religions, and politicians.

I've been reading about World War I lately, and to me it looks like the past 100 years have been shaped by it and it's aftermath. It led almost directly to WWII, because of the way Germany was dealt with. The winners divided up the world each time, creating new problems waiting to happen in Europe, Asia and the Mid-East. America came out ahead in the deal, and they've enjoyed some time as a superpower. But it's too expensive to be the world's policeman, and people can't agree anymore on what's worth fighting for and what's not. What seems like helping allies or saving innocent lives to some, is just pointless aggression or sticking our nose into other people's business to others. I wouldn't mind seeing the EU, Russia, and China step up and provide security for their regions from now on. Let the US concentrate on North and South America.

Agreed - except for the fact that US has invested a lot of money in the Arms industry and military - Do you realise how much US spends on ''war'' every year - last time I looked it was abt 50c on every dollar of tax revenue.
