In Germany, there are so many foreign pepole, from Irish, English and American - amongst many others - and if we would care about perfect German with all these people, one would expect us to be bloddy-minded and backwards - what primitives!
Even with those who have lived here for many years, we speak in their own language - simply because of respect.

Thanks to you - Brexit-Guys - our English will deteriorate further, as this language will lose importance in Europe.

you are destroying you own culture

people that go to Germany should respect your language by trying to speak it especially if they are living their it's not bloddy-minded and backwards to expect respect of your culture/language it's not primitive you fool most of the world is primitive but for all it's faults Europe is not primitive

I would have to disagree with you on that. It depends on region. I know I only speak for myself but generally Spanish is now considered our second language. That was not always the case, but in the last 25 years Latinos are a fast rising minority in our country, so fast that they are estimated to be the majority in less than 50 years.

Just curious about this aspect of your statement and wanted to ask: Why do think it is respectful to speak their language first than to speak your own native language? Most countries I have visited in Europe the opposite is true so I am rather interested in this topic as it relates to Germany and their perspective of this one cultural aspect.

This of course leads me to asking further questions such as your views on the German identity and multiculturalism that your country seems to want to embrace. I am rather confounded about these topics as embracing things like sharia law, immigration, and the growing unpopularity with Merkel in dealing with terrorism has been very detrimental to the stability of your societies in both present and future tense. I would like if you are able to communicate you views and why? Of course assuming you support such views.

Are you asking him for an essay? In German is ok. We can always plug it through Google translate.

I can speak for the British and I think as a whole we are quite unbending and lazy when it comes to speaking other languages when abroad, just because everyone speaks English. I have heard many times things like: "I WOULD LIKE MY STEAK WELL DONE," shouted and pronounced slowly. They're not deaf or stupid. I simply cringe. On the other hand, they are keen to practice their English on us, so we don't get a chance and their English is far better.

Culturally, I think we are far more western European than American. And they are our neighbours. So it's a shame that languages are not given more priority in schools. I did 5 years of French in school and I am not and never was fluent, though I should have been! I could get by quite well though at the time. There was a lot of focus on the written and getting it right grammatically, at the expense of just speaking it. I have been wanting to polish up for a while and I am finally now making more of an effort; it is mainly the vocabulary I have forgotten, but I'm still clued up on the grammar and sentence structures, which makes my ability as useful as a chocolate teapot.

I am keen to move part time to France (school holidays), so I really must make more effort! I want my kids to be fluent and I will be sticking them in French summer clubs, so at least they can just speak it. I really like the attitude of the French. They don't believe in multiculturalism and are quite open that it doesn't work. They proudly fly the French flag and believe that when in France, first and foremost, you respect the French way; that is secularism. Good on them! Wear a burkha or burkini and you get arrested.

So what do these Muslims do when crossing the channel to the UK? They wear normal clothes in France and change into their burkas as soon as the ferry enters UK waters. F-ing disgraceful. And we encourage that shit.

English is as international as other languages like Spanish and French, German ...

Of course, in Germany it is expected that foreign people learn German and integrate, as they settle in Germany.
I give you an example: Ive got a friend who married a woman (mixed marriages are quite normal and popular in Germany) who was born in Malaysia and studied in the US. They now live in Germany. Shes good in German but if she would like to share some deeper thoughts we communicate in an "international" combination of languages with her to make things easier and to give her the opportunity to say what she intends to say. Thats just a matter of respect. I think its important to stay open-minded... and this has nothing to do with giving up cultural identity.

And of course, Jen - Im fascinated by France too, and if there were no complex French language I would have lived there for years.

I've never really had much of an opportunity to speak French other than the usual, in shops and restaurants, so guess what, those are the places where I can get by the best. If I lived in France, I dread the thought of, say for example getting my head around legalities, reading contracts, dealing with builders, that sort of thing! I remember a Grand Designs programme where an English couple bought a dilapidated chateau and proceeded to renovate it, mostly by themselves. They had no building experience and couldn't speak French. They hired Monsieur B'stard, a builder, who shrugged his shoulders a lot, didn't do much but took their money. Yes, I can fall out with a lot of people and for the life of me, I would not be able to argue in French! Those are the sort of things I worry about.

I see and thanks for the insights. I have two 8 year olds (Twins) who are bilingual now as their mother is Taiwanese and was insistent on them learning Chinese. Of course it helps having in-laws who have encouraged that learning process. My wife always gives me grief and ridicules me that I don't improve my Chinese, (I am terrible at the language) due to not communicating with the kids in the language, but my excuse is I am the balance between the two, and the in-laws it is easier to play dumb. Ooops an admission of my laziness. My wife is the tiger mom sort, so my kids think I am a push over because I am always giving in, they are approaching the age where they are beginning to push boundaries when their mother isn't around so I guess the criticism is at times is warranted. I am looking forward to when we can return to the states and all this culture shock can be put into the rear view mirror and I am back in my element such as mowing the lawn.(You may laugh but I am very fond of mowing my lawn and riding my John Deer mower, it is very therapeutic for me to do so.)

As far as the other issues I asked SOS, I am not satisfied by some of the answers given, or lack thereof as he only addresses the language issue, which to be fair is a insightful honest answer. When I hear about countries such as Sweden, Germany, Britain and parts of the Netherlands committing cultural genocide, questions still remain for me as to why. So naturally you can understand why I would be curious to understand to ask a native these questions, not for the simple reason that I have some nefarious plan to out them, but a genuine sincere curiosity for a deeper understanding of these issues affecting Europe.

It is amazing how quickly your French improves when you are stuck in Algeria without a passport. Language choices: Arabic or French.
The wealthy few (who can afford the education) speak some English. Maybe there are more English speakers in the 'tourist' areas such as Algiers.

In the UK I have seen the gradual demise. IMHO, and it is only my HO, it has been caused by a mixture of apathy and the fluffy-bunny brigade. After the last major war there was a community spirit that believed in helping others to overcome their adversity. Mainly because there was nothing around and you had to make do with what there was, food rationing continued until 1954. Therefore a 'don't complain, just put up with it' mentality was formed. This mentality was exploited by the fluffy-bunny brigade in recent years. They leant on the 'help the poor and down-trodden' handle using the fluffy-bunny tactic. As a result our community-centric welfare spirit was extended way outside our national boundaries and encouraged another influx of people from countries where there is no support infrastructure for the ordinary person. They brought their culture with them, and were not required to modify it as a consequence of residency.

As my (Indian) friend who lives in Hong Kong once put it, "you had such a good thing going here and then you gave it all away".
