Appreciate your commentary, as always. Definitely agree that getting the timing right is the most difficult part, and that downside breakouts is safer than attempting to pick tops.

Looks like (according to my FA sources) that there is an increased risk of FOMC being dovish, hence I'll gladly accept the pips I banked before heading off to bed last night,.and sit out the FOMC now. Will see what happens with AUD before Tuesday; might decide on trading a different pair depending on what happens.

Up 2.9% since I started trading spot again back in January. Most painstaking money that I've ever made, LOL.

[EDIT] Looks like the FOMC release is typically low key non-committal (key comments for me are "The Committee anticipates that it will be appropriate to raise the target range for the federal funds rate when it has seen further improvement in the labor market and is reasonably confident that inflation will move back to its 2 percent objective over the medium term. ........... The Committee currently anticipates that, even after employment and inflation are near mandate-consistent levels, economic conditions may, for some time, warrant keeping the target federal funds rate below levels the Committee views as normal in the longer run.") Hence I read that as 'neutral', as a rate hike late this year is still potentially on the table, but it will continue to depend on employment and inflation numbers.

Attached is a ZIP containing a comma separated (CSV) file of FF calendar news announcements from Jan 1, 2007 thru May 8, 2015, timestamped New York EST (or DST when applicable). The CSV file can be imported to any platform (e.g. Excel) for further analysis.

Columns (from left to right) are: Date, Time, Currency, News description, Impact, Actual, Forecast, Previous, Revised from, Plotted wingdings symbol (ignore), Color value (ignore), Spacing (ignore), FF event ID

Although I don't personally need this information right now, I can appreciate the importance of it when backtesting strategies which avoid taking trades just before, or holding existing trades during, high impact news. The news downloader is part of an app that I wrote (screenshot here) using an old 16-bit release of Clarion, and was originally part of the Plot News indicator system. I removed it from Platform Tech after one user claimed that it damaged his computer, and my subsequent attempts to upload it to FF failed to pass their security scan. (However, it had previously been downloaded more than 70,000 times without any faults being reported, and I've used it myself without problems since the original version in 2007).

The Clarion app calls GNU's WGET freeware to obtain the FF calendar HTML, and then parses the HTML file returned on a character by character basis, to build and maintain its own database of news announcements. Among other functions, it also outputs this data in a number of different formats (one such file was used by the Plot News indicator to plot both prior and upcoming news on MT4 charts).

There's no reason to use Clarion (whose compiler costs around $2,000); you could use any other programming language (if you use MT4 for your charting, then possibly even MQL4). However, there are no shortcuts that I'm aware of, unless you can find a good HTML to text converter. I had to strip out all of the HTML tokens programatically.

There is one other drawback: Every time the FF programmers change their calendar's HTML format, the Clarion app must be modified to parse the new format. I expect that's a good reason why most of the other news indicators use the FF-supplied XML page, even though it contains only upcoming news for the current week, and hence no 'Actual' values for past announcements.

Alright thanks very much! My friend once mentioned using Python to crawl lots of data from the web, dya think it would be a one of the good alternatives to look into for this case here?

Coincidentally, a year or so ago, I was thinking of teaching myself Python (here is good selection of resources), although I subsequently got sidetracked into other projects.

As an old COBOL programmer from the 1970s/80s, I'm not really up-to-date with all of the latest OO languages, and their capabilities -- perhaps somebody else could help?

This is a dangerous question as everyone is extremely biased.

I have stumbled upon a lot of Python when looking at web development and have worked with it myself for a few weeks. I personally really disliked using it as programming in python felt more like scripting javascript. In my opinion the language is a little bit too minimalistic (e.g. without the use of brackets) but maybe that's exactly a "feature" someone else likes.
If you consider Python you should maybe also consider ruby? I think you can not be wrong with any of those 2.

To be fair I am doing everything I can in Java as I grew up with this language and I feel most comfortable using it including web crawling and database operations. Rarely I had to switch to C++ for some really deep down OS operations but besides that I am really happy. I was forced to work with scala asp and prolog but java has always been my favorite

Look into PyCharm. I haven't used it, but there's a free edition that seems to cover the necessities. If it's anything like PHPStorm then it'll be worth the download.

Building a crawler like that would be really useful to test out some of my hypotheses about the market.

Any language that lets you send and receive over HTTP will do what you want. The last I checked MQL can crawl if you want it to.

Some sites, though, can be a right fuck-around to actually navigate. ASP sites can choke on a dick. Some of those stupid sites track your location on the server instead of just providing normal URL's that say what resource you want, so navigation links on each page you visit are just "dumb" buttons that tell the server what you pressed not where you want to go... and then the server has to figure-out where it thinks you are trying to navigate to. If you open a second tab and navigate around in that and then return to your original window then when you click a button on the original window it takes you somewhere totally unrelated to what is actually on that page because the second tab you had open has since changed where the server expects you to be, so it navigates you based on the last page you had open.

Fucking stupid.

Regarding the text you receive... I would have to assume Python has something similar/identical... but in PHP there are a few different DOM objects you can dump html text into, and it then turns that into objects that you can then deal with. This is much the same as how you deal with shit in Javascript where you can get returned a list of objects that are of a certain class name or id or type, etc. That shit gets real easy real fast. No string manipulations at all.

Your posts are highly intellectual, u are a very respected person on this forum, I saw u posted on the thread "Higher Edge within a single candlestick" but the post is now gone. If its possible I would like to ask a few questions, I wanted to pm u but apparently its not available, I don't know why. Pls answer if its possible without divulging your privacy, thanks in advance.

Questions about the 2 traders which u mentioned using TA and another 1 trader using FA

1) TA - What type of trader are they? - Scapler, Day, Swing, Long Term
2) TA - How do they trade? - Naked PA or Indicators?
3)TA - If Indicators - What do they use? - S/R, S/D, Pivot, Volume, Fibonacci, Harmonics, Moving Average, Breakout?
4) FA - Short term news spike or Long Term Fundamental?
5) MM - How much risk do the traders take?
6) TF - What TF are they looking at?

I would very much like to see how TA works, It would be great if u can provide some info on what works which divulging any info which u do not want to be out in the public forum, pls feel free to contact me. And I know u are a very busy man. Once again thanks.

Although it appears you have great warm feelings toward me, please don't take this email as an attack or to provoke anything. I have no other intentions apart from just really wanting to get your personal opinion. I wanted to email you personally, but there was no email button. You can email me if you don't want to post your respond here.

I constantly interview a lot of people regarding trading (and any form of success in any area of life) and I keep a record for my own development and research. You've fallen into a particular category group of people (and that's why I am here trying to email/PM you). I know a little of your trading history as you mentioned them here on the forums. Your response is highly appreciated and will add to my research.

Firstly you qualify, as you appear to be highly logical and objective in your thinking. But my question will be subjective and personal (so if you don't want to post them publicly, please email me instead) but please try to answer them as logical and as objective as you can.

So here are my questions:

  1. After years of trading, where do YOU think you have failed and missed your goals and targets? (is it technical or subjective?)
  2. Despite having friends who are successful in trading, why do YOU think you are unable to gain from their experiences or knowledge? (doesn't your successful friends want to teach you? or is the knowledge not transferable to you/anyone?)
  3. As you appear to be highly logical and objective, what do YOU think is the difference between you and your millionaire trader friends/associates? (either subjective or technical)

I am a follower of your posts and your posts have always intrigued me. I would like to enquire are u willing to share your interviews and research about successful people or traders. I retired from the corporate software world back in 2004. These days I make most of my income from investments, and other business interests. So if I'm not a serious forex trader, why do I post here? I've been asked that before. Well, back in 2006 a friend introduced me to MQL4, and I wrote a news indicator. I exchanged PMs with merlin and he persuaded me to share it here. Over time I wrote and shared a number of other indicators, developed an interest in forex, and then I gradually joined in some of the discussions. Trading forums have become something of a guilty pleasure, and I've always found writing to be a good outlet for relieving stress.

Likewise, I play with forex when the mood grabs me. (After all, it's more interesting than watching re-runs of David Letterman, LOL). Depending on the amount of time that I have available, I tinker with automated systems, which limits profit potential (i.e. to whatever extent trading requires nuanced decision making, a veteran trader will obviously outperform a rote mechanical algo). Of course it would give me some satisfaction to develop a money-making EA, but if it doesn't ever happen, it's certainly not the end of my world. Faith, family, health, and income generating projects necessarily come first.

To answer your questions, then, I don't really have any forex-related goals or targets. Instead, I'd argue that setting goals and targets creates undue performance anxiety, at least for my personality type. Forex is not my personal yardstick for measuring success or failure, and moreover, it would be delusional for me to compare myself to traders who've dedicated their whole lives to forex, and spent many thousands of hours honing their skills. Their success is richly deserved, and I applaud their dedication and perseverance.

I don't claim to have your unsurpassed insight into things forex, but I'll nonetheless continue to post my views whenever the mood grabs me to do so.

I hope that my response meets your standards of logic and objectivity.
