its simple maths.....
an exchange rate is a comparison between 2 currency so if a currency the for as long as any currency in the pair exists, even having a value of 0.000001 its still divisible and an exchange rate can be given..... now if it reaches 0, exchange rate is either infinity or 0 but if that was the situation. the currency pair probably doesn't exist anymore since one or both currency doesn't exists anymore.....

yea for a currency pair like GBPUSD GBP cant have a value of 0 for as long as it exists. hence GBPUSD will never ever reach 0

how can an exchange rate reach negative??..... I cant compute it in my brain... all I can think of is a currency pair having infinite amount of decimal place

just like USDJPY... reverse the rate JPY/USD, 1/119.20 = 0.0083, and if Yen is to become almost worthless, it will only make JPY/USD reach 0.0000083 instead. itll never reach true 0....
and surely never go negative...

Pop quiz: If eurozone defaults. Euro goes to the toilet. How many dollars will it take to buy Euro?

Answer: 0. So When a currency goes to zero (or kaput), the exchange rate can go to zero.

Simple math.

PS: Your example of a currency having a value of 0.0000001 does not mean anything. A currency does not have any value of its own. It is only with respect to another currency that a currency's value can be measured. So an exchange rate is all you got for a currency.

But heres the problem. if the currency is kaput, no body will buy it dude... its valueless and hence it wont exist..... so there wont be a EURUSD, if Eurozone defaults and euro gets broken up into individual currency, you will see FF/USD (French franc / USD), or DEM/USD (deutsche mark/ USD)

So your argument is still invalid.

Also, regarding on your currency only has value in respect to another currency, that's not always true, some currencies are backed by the value of an underlying asset. but heres the problem the world relies on USD as the underlying asset to value their currency... so how does USD gets its value? who the fuck knows?

this is a good read on how a currency/money acquire its value. if it doesn't rely on other currency to determine its value.
fiat currency is the modern day bartering system
we are still demanding something....

BTW even if EURO becomes kaput, and value depreciates a lot theres still value on the Euro. its a paper afterall, just how much its worth is up to the demander....

so no currency will ever be valueless.... but the value can be infinitely small like worth 0.0000001
