I agree that Gold has no fundamental reason for value at present but up until a couple of years ago I would have disagreed with the inflation theory. The Gold market has certainly changed in recent years due to a number of reasons, the major factor imo is the drop in demand since the downturn of China's building boom. Obviously it was lifted additionally to heights during the GFC as a safe haven along with other markets as you mentioned. So imo the Gold market is currently having a natural correction to appropriate levels. Traditionally October is Gold season mainly for the fact that India has created substantial demand in the past for their wedding ceremonies. This year however the government of India has restricted the import of Gold dampening the market impact. With these two major factors taken from the market imo Gold has become stagnant and until the next major demand source is found I believe your inflation theory stands. side note: vote for SNB to buy up Gold approaching.
I'm not sure something like Platinum could ever replace Gold however. As a investment tool I can see the benefits but the fact is imo is that Gold's availability will always be its selling point along with its psychological importance that has been carried throughout history.
Tulip Mania is indeed well documented and well worth studying. I wonder if Gold's volatility would be increased dramatically if it were used as a reserve or if in fact it would have the opposite effect. Obviously during times of trouble Gold will always be a safe haven just because it's a readily available precious metal that most can get their hands on (small or large amounts) but atm not only is the USD having a good recovery but is probably the safe haven by choice which again influences Gold's influences on the markets.

Got a moon sell signal today on EURUSD.. looks like today we break out of this consolidation and head south.... will get out of my short next week

EU DAILY / 4 Hr

Very itchy to take profit (and actually did take some), but seeing more down potential on higher timeframes. On the daily, we first had a bull Lower Lower trend reversal bull setup that failed, then a bear inside-outside-inside that did not trigger an entry, and now another inside-inside breakout mode setup, begs at least a test below the low of yesterday and possibly a selloff to a new lower low.

On the 4 Hr I see a strong breakout from a triangle bear flag. Could still fail, of course...
