You can't stick around here for very long without one. So: Scotland, Catluņa, Basque lands, Wales, Flanders,....my knowledge of European geography and history is as limited as that of most dumb Americans - but you get my drift - once the dominos start to fall, where will they end? Somewhere down the line the euro is back to being the Deutschmark and who's to say that would not be a better state of affairs?

If EUR zone collapses and EUR is converted back to old currencies, I will put everything I have on Deutsche Mark like many would do. I have never had a good feeling about a single currency being used in such a complex geography. What have I in common with Estonia,Latvia or Cyprus? Politicians enforced it but it was never a democratic choice of citizens. Not being able to have control on monetary policy for many European countries is a major problem I believe. The ECB is no Fed, Fed is very efficient, less discussion more action when necessary where in Frankfurt or Brussels things take ages to sort out. Anyway, don't want to go off topic but EUR is a dream, an obligatory dream, unnatural and synthetic.

There are a lot of regions that would like (more) independence, but my take is that the scottisch situation is in a way unique, and mishandled by the UK government. I'd say its because they don't really have a clue what to do with their EU membership, accepted a possible referendum about that as well and backed themselves in a corner.

The spanish central government will not accept any outcome of referendums, the same is valid for Italy, France, Germany. We might see a fallback to national currencies, or a a split within the euro, but I don't think we'll see a EU that's made up from regions rather than nations.

On the outcome of the vote: I'd say it will be a 'No'. All polls I've seen said no, with the exception of one 'yougov' poll, but that was only for one weekend. There is a margin of error, and there are lots of 'undecided', but generally 'meta-polls' do well / show a high probability.

One might once again be inclined to 'travel' since it would again become interesting. I remember taking the train across europe and at each border you stop, do the whole passports thing, change engines (some diesel some electric overhead other's goodness only knows.)

It was an expedition with much interest and excitement. Collection your money was a joy. 3 or 4 different types of Francs, Deutchmarks, Italian Lira at a few thousand to the pound. Simply doing the conversions in your head made it all interesting. The Euro is a BORING currency designed to keep Germany's exchange rate artificially low and provide them with huge export advantage. Germany's exports might not fare quite so well globally were the Euro valued on Germany's performance alone (sic. deutchmark) and many countries would have had to tumble out of the currency as did GBP from the ERM.

Ah those misty-eyed reminiscences.....;-)

yep, seems so, the early exit polls will confirm it, probably no closer that 48/52 YES. So I woke up at 0-dark-thirty thinking I might catch a break and pile into some long VIX futures that would pay off my house when Scotland shocked the world. Guess I will go back to bed.

Ahah great post, it took me back to those years when the coffee and apfelstrudel tasted better in Vienna, and beer was colder in Budapest. Thank you for reminding me of those great days.
