I think the reason some traders tend to pick on your trading is because we've all seen so many "martingale-type" systems that have no discipline so just continue to add to the "losing trade" so they don't have to admit they're wrong. Most see it as someone trading that doesn't really know how to trade or have no fundamental knowledge either so it's an easy system for a uneducated trader/gambler. You've shown you have technical & fundamental reasons for your trading which is different than most scale-in traders. I think you'll be successful with your trading as long as you know when to admit your analysis is wrong & don't throw away several months worth of profits in one bad trade. I tried a similar scale-in system only it was day-trading so at the end of the day I had no open positions. I went 40 days straight with profits everyday but in the end I quit trading the method. Certain days it was difficult to recover from a loss & I knew if price continued against me I would be sitting on a large loss @ the end of the day.

Sorry for the long comment, just hope you have the discipline to know when to pull the plug on a trade & take the loss.

There is a distinct difference between cost averaging, adding a position and martingale adds.

Just thought I'd point that out.

Personally, I am a fan of all of them...but you are correct in that it does require discipline and knowing when to cut bait and swim.

calculated and planned scaling-in and out is not martingale. When you scale in and out you have to do it at certain pips distance, not at every 10 or 20 pips. If you add to a position too often and too frequently at small pips step, that is the same as opening a big position in a narrow price range, and any spike will wipe you out. Take a small position and add small at large pip step is the way to go. And when you add, do not double each time. If you really want to put more weight for later adding, do it linearly, not exponentially. Further more, when price retrace to your BE point, reduce your total position size, to be prepared for price going against you again, so you can add again from what has been reduced.

Systematic triggering with the addition of larger sized lots can be very lucrative.

Just has to be applied under the proper scrutiny.

Timing isn't the only thing in market...

I agree the biggest problem with scaling-in is adding too soon. That's what I found out at times during my day-trading trial. I got too anxious to add at every little swing-point thinking the market would turn in my favor but if it didn't my trade size got too big so adding became more of a problem as the losses started growing at an uncomfortable rate. I think the key to any scale-in trading is knowing how often to add.

I've been trading nat. gas with a similar method of adding(long-only) every 4% in price decline.

it would be more manageable to add at large pip steps. If you do it day trading on small time frames, you have to set strict point to get out if the market does not go you way or to your BE point. I usually add at 40 - 50 pips step, and sometimes even larger pip steps, so 100 or 200 pips against me wont sweat me that much.

So...

Lemme get this straight...

You've missed a position by 100 pips and you add?
lol

What if it only goes 98 pips? Comes back to your original and reverses again?

If you are this much off enough to create a range, how do you even know when it is time to exit a trade?

How did you figure out your first position? And if you are typically hundreds of pips off, shouldn't you be looking for another way to trade?

it would not go that far against me in reality. suppose price goes 100 pips from your first position opening, and you add more linearly to your later positions, your average price will be less than 50 pips against you, not the 100 pip where you started. Also you do this not at the beginning of a counter trend, you wait for possible price exhaustion and then start building positions. You only need price to retrace less than half from where you started to get to your BE. At BE point, the key step is to reduce position size to reduce risk, and leave the rest to run. How much to keep to run, depends on PA situations.

This is crazy talk and really bad logic that has proven to fail time and time again.

You should sit these conversations out. They do not lend to your knowledge, they make you appear a rank, amateur.

If you take a position 100 pips away from your first position, you are not cost averaged to 50, you are at 100 with 2 losers.

If I build a position going for more than 100 pips target, what is the problem to add when price goes 100 pips against me? I mostly trade weekly charts while you trip on the 1-min charts. Different time frames.
