A = 3((a * 2)/2) / 2 = 3a/2


Okay that's the information (phew).


Question: How long is the banana? - Find b...


a + A = 30
a + 3a/2 = 30
5/2(a) = 30
a = 30*(2/5) = 12 --- monkey (a) is 12 - mother (A) is 18


L = a = 12 --- rope is 12 feet (144 in)


w = A = 18 --- weight of monkey = 18 (oz)


2b + w/2 = 1/4 (2b + w + 4/9 L)
2b + 18/2 = 1/4 (2b + 18 + 4/9*144)
2b + 9 = 1/4(2b + 18 + 64)
8b + 36 = 2b + 82
6b = 46
b = 46/6 = 23/3 = 7 2/3 inches

Ah, sorry, I thought it had beaten the thread... I was inclined to get a tape measure and take an average of the bananas in the fruit bowl, but my grey matter was too tired from trying to prove its worth against the original question, and so capitulated.

And not to be too particular, but the question asked for length, whereas the two previous answers offered, stated years as the length.
