The makers of MT4 have never really cared much for the the users of their client terminal. They mostly have ignored their needs, wants and wishes. They have a history of releasing buggy updates. Forced updates were instituted some time ago. So the current line of events is hardly surprising and neither should it be unexpected. Ultimately, you get what you pay for. If you pay peanuts, you will get monkeys.

Metaquotes does whatever they want to, as they have always done. If you want a company that cares about you and will maintain support for older versions of their software, you will have to look elsewhere and probably pay a premium for it.

The client is about 8 years old is in need of an upgrade to stay competitive with current software. Interestingly, they made no improvements to the user interface. For them, it is all about the app and signal store.

They did throw you a bone. You are not entirely without options. You can still run your old compiled programs in the new MT4. This feature was a bit weak to begin with but it seems to work now for most programs. It may take some work as the update process is not always problem free. The interface has not had any updates whatsoever so it should be fine with all the people who do not like change. If you are really desperate, you can figure out how to stop the forced updates and then you have until the summer when they will probably switch of support for build 509 on the servers. If you object to the new directory structure, they have the portable switch available. Yes, it will take some work to get it figured out. Move your MT4 installation to a different folder or drive or whatever.

- Could the update have been handled better?
Hell yes.
- Could backward compatibility have been retained to a better degree?
Of course. All that is missing is the old compiler and a method to determine file types. (file extension or #property would do fine).
- Who the hell came up with the brilliant idea of forcing users on live accounts to upgrade to what is essentially a beta?
Don't know.

Most people involved in trading in the forex market are doing it to make money. However, they seem expect all services to be provided to them for free. The tools should be free (trading clients, news feeds etc), the courses should be free, the programmers should work for free on their indicators and EAs that they will (hopefully) use to make money, the websites should be free and so on. Free, free, free. Everything should be free. But me the trader should make money. It is not really viable.

Edit: Sorry, I did not mean to imply that everybody expects free stuff. There is a small minority that actually do pay for stuff. So if you offer to pay for 5 minutes of a programmers time you would technically qualify to be a part of that group. It is not uncommon here on forexfactory that programmers are forced to turn off their private message service due to the overwhelming number of requests for free programming they receive.

If the EA is coded properly for the newer MT4 C++ programming then it will work just fine but if you have an older EA MT4 program that does not follow the exact format etc. necessary (most of the old ones won't) then you do not want to put the .mq4 file in the folder with the .ex4. If you do then the .ex4 will become corrupted. You can thou go to a v500 mt4 and recompile it there and then copy the .ex4 (only) back to the 600 folder and it will work fine. I hope this is clear and helpful for you.

I don't care whether they care about me as a trader or not. But they have to care about their own success. Whether they like me or not they MUST provide a service to the community that is acceptable or they will fail regardless of what their ultimate goal is. That's business pure and simple.

Pay for platforms also suck. Had eSignal and Tradestation for years and they were no better than MT4 as far as what's necessary to trade that is and they were constantly changing their stuff too.

The client was about 8 years old yes but 8 years of success old. No one was complaining about *we need a complete change.. no one. The only reason they did this upgrade thing was to get a store online to make a buck. Now I have nothing against people getting paid for a valid service, all they had to do is charge a small fee, either one time, monthly or annually or at least give us a choice to do that or ELSE. That would have been just fine with me provided it was reasonable. But instead, they put a stick of dynamite under the whole kit & caboodle and blew it to smithereens. That is no way to run any business and is guaranteed to lose more interest than it gains.

Throw me a bone? They can have my bone. There was no public beta at all. No one knew what to do to handle trading while they suddenly shoved one after the other updates out from and into a different environment altogether while trying to keep up trading without losing not only regular profits but also principle. This stunt has caused great risk to many people out there and is simply unforgivable.

Please don't throw out this red herring about everyone wants everything free.. this is simply not true period. At least everyone I know does not want peoples' time and efforts for free myself included. That's simply bologna. I have paid many a dollar for help with programming and other things while learning to do these things for myself through the years.

I was forced to update - I didn't expect it, my VPS just did it automatically without prompting me.

Two problems already with v600:
1. all saved presets seem to have been wiped!
2. some EAs (my favourites) are having errors now (even Mt4i Publisher and myfxbook EA are stuffing up)

So much for "backward compatibility".

Any suggested solutions? I hate MetaQuotes, but I love MetaTrader 4 and it is all I know right now.

Will decompiling / recompiling with v600 fix my EAs?
Are the presets moved somewhere else? (they are not in the new folder location for Presets)

Yes, simply read back about the last 20 post. Will explain everything to you and you should be good to go although still hassled about to death. lol

Oh fine. That's new ! I'm still running all my platforms under 509. Will probably do myself the install of a 600+ this week-end to see how all this goes ... of course keeping my 509s for now!

Here is what I have for folders on new build from MT4.
Check how yours compare.
Note that the folder for my laptop is read only.
The Next Level shows where Metaquotes was still able to write as was Babylon, a toolbar I never ordered or downloaded and it persists.
So was Microsoft. The rest I allowed from a prompt.
The bottom level is empty of my stuff.
So How do I determine where to install my ex4??
Is that final folder unique to me, FXDD or does everyone have the same folder on the same path.
Imagine a trader with minimal computer background finding the bottom folder.

Hello,

the following is directed to those people in competing products like "cTrader"/"ProTrader" etc
who can make decisions concerning their price-policy:

I am prepared to pay a monthly fixed sum for a decent product.

This goes also to every broker who is contemplating about leaving MT4.

I say this because I suspect MetaQuotes dominates the markets because of their "cheap"
policy in the first place (which isn't cheap FOR THE USERS IN THE END).

This is a hindrance for competing companies to be able to enter the market on a more wider
scale.

So,please think about a package/pricing model which includes the user paying a certain
amount monthly (on top of spreads etc) and get the competition going again.
At least more brokers would be willing to offer an alternative.

I did pay 100 USD/month already 10 years ago (for the charting part only,which included
its own data stream).

Believe or not,the different price stream alone made my money back easily (but I have to
admit it was a different time then.And NOW we are looking for SOFTWARE QUALITY,not for
data!).



What do you,the fellow users,think about this approach ? Are you willing to pay a certain
monthly fee for a good,trustworthy software ?
(Just to get rid of this crap. And yes,don't forget about the "virtual dealer" plugin as well !).

I finally installed a 600+ platform, set the portable thing ... and the data folder is where it should inside the platform folder.

BTW, all my 509s are still there without being updated ... So far so good !

I'm running them side-by-side with no problems. On my system b509 gets updates from Program Data\MetaQuotes\WebInstall whereas later builds use <User Dir>\App Data\Roaming\MetaQuotes\WebInstall. So live updates of b600+ don't interfere with b509. Which is nice.

Also, I have UAC turned off so I don't need to use the /portable switch.

OK. I stand corrected. (Silly me, I should have instantly realized that the quotes are necessary because there are embedded spaces in the path name).
