How to generate Market Profiles in Excel?



Step-by-step



Preamble:

I mainly use market profiles which are not static, like the traditional market profiles (daily, weekly, monthly). Instead I use "rolling" market profiles. That means: my market profiles use a certain lookback period (in my case: 32 periods) to create a market profile.


Why a rolling period?


In my belief system, markets are fractal. So we can see price development on different wave degree when we switch through timeframes.

On the other hand, I think, that we can only make good trading decisions, when we look at different timeframes. So I am a MTF trader.


Further point in my belief system is, that there is something like market memory. Market remembers some points from the past and acts at those levels accordingly. The farther the points are in the past, the more insignificant they get.


So when one event rolls out of our 32 period timeframe on a small TF, a bigger TF will catch up this event/level and sets it into the perspective of the bigger events and so on.


Why 32 periods?


It is, because I am also a Murrey Math trader and all my Murrey Math systems use a lookback period of 32. See Murrey Math material for further reference to the lookback period.


So when I refer to my market profiles, I often use the term MMSMP, which means Murrey Math Synchronized Market Profiles



OK, how to build the Excel based Market Profiles:



basically: transfer the last 32 completed periods of each TF you need from e.g. MT4 to Excel


but that would be too easy :-)



the more data we use, the better our profiles get. Best would be, when we would use the tick-data of the system. But that would lead to unnecessary high data load and calculations.



For the 15min Market Profile I use 480 1 min data sets (15x32=480)

For the 60min MP I use 1920 1 min data sets

For the 240 min MP I use 1536 5 min data sets

For the daily MP I use 768 60min data sets

For the weekly MP I use 960 240min data sets

For the monthly MP I use 864 daily data sets


Out of statistical considerations, the data sets should be ideally be minimum 700-900


As you can see, the 15min MP is only made out of 480 data sets, but we can not solve this problem easily. So we have to live with this issue.


For each data set we do need: H, L, C, and tick-volume (in case you like to calculate the VPO instead of TPO; I highly recommend the VPO).


So, when you have transferred the appropriate amounts of data sets to Excel, you do calculate from each data-set the Pivot ((H+L+C)/3))



Now you have many Pivots to calculate the market profiles from.




Step 1)

determine the lowest and the highest Pivot-Value


Step 2)

in order to get MP's, we have to build equidistant baskets in order to drop the Pivots into them


I work with 300 equidistant baskets. So we calculate the difference between between highest and lowest pivot and divide it by 300. Now you know how wide each basket has to be. Mostly I have 1-2 pips for each basket.


Now get Excel to drop the Pivot values into the appropriate baskets.

After that, get Excel to calculate the cumulative tick-volume of each basket.



Now you have basically the profile.


After that get Excel to find the basket with the highest tick-volume. That is your POC.


Now get Excel to calculate the volume weighted average of your basket. Determine the standard deviation. Now Excel can calculate the Gaussian distribution curve.


Seidelmeyer calculates the value area. That is the area, where roughly 70% of all trades took place. I have not been able to get this with Excel. It would take very good VBA programming skills to get it. Some people say, it can not be done with Excel.


Many of the calculations use the Excel function "Sumproduct"

(Gasp, gasp, pant, pant) Just catching my breath. Would you believe all this is just a return to the Mean? My slowest M.A. is still pointing up, but I just had to take advantage of the parabolic drop. Watch carefully, after the Asian session, by 3,4am est we will know that It goes on down, baby down!
