I'm just wondering the limit to gains that can be had in the forex market through a broker like oanda... can't seem to get a straight answer out of anyone

I don't personally know anyone who does this, (trade forex) and certainly not anyone that makes real (big) money doing so...

I just started about 6 months ago.

it is possible to make big money. it is also possible to make 40% in a week. but that is not your goal right now. your goal right now is to survive. try not to blow up your account in the initial stage. then the next goal is to make money. make small money first, then big money later.

also be humble. there are many good traders here in this threads.

So are you saying it's a legit market where traders can trade with 50/1 leverage even with say a 200 thousand dollar account?

Also I'm being humble... but I also know that one can not make 1000% on account in one day.... At best maybe 2 days but that only happens once every 10 years.... One would need a 500 pip gain and be ALL IN.

yes but if you trade 50:1 with 200k, you won't have 200k for very long.

they want you to use high leverage so you can lose money quick.
200k is a decent money to start with.

my current broker only allows 50:1 leverage and I believe that's across the board in the US.
