The wide spread in the last second of trading was simply a bad price from a single provider (although probably a fair reflection of their interest in trading in the last second of trading). On the basis that it wasn't really representative of the market state at that time we have amended the chart.

Spikes happen at different brokers at different times. At the end of the day, it's all dependent on the prices that have been received from the liquidity provider.

Maybe someone knows..

How to get rid of this annoying thud "dingg"
that occurs every time a new candle appears or when you switch from M1 to M5.
It drives me mad

It happens only with Alpari MT4

Does someone have the same problem (feature) ?
How to opt out annoying user signatures ??

Menu -- Tools -- Options -- Events tab
Uncheck the "enable" box.
You can also selectively disable only certain sounds.

MT5 is there a way to get rid of the up and down arrows that show entry and exits of trades i find them really annoying on the chart

when i connect to mt5 server on my mobile phone it says invalid server name contact broker.
works on my Pc but not on my iphone started today have worked fine for several weeks so is there only problem with the i-OS app?

I've used an Alpari UK micro account for several years, on and off, and not encountered any major problems with it. However, now I wish to trade full time with a lot more money and I would therefore like to ask for clarification on a few points that I don't understand. (These questions are aimed at Alex from Alpari if you're still around)

I have seen many references to Alpari's "multiple liquidity providers" but not once have I seen any of them named. I find this very disturbing. If they are reputable banks, which are involved in making a market in the interbank environment, why can't you name them? The fact you do not name them seems to suggest that they are not in fact reputable market making banks.

My second question is who are the participants making prices on the ECN service? I noticed that you said none of them are banks so who are they?

I don't mean this post to come across as anti Alpari in any way as I have not had any problems with the company, as I mentioned above. But, now that I will be risking much more of my money, I think my questions are reasonable. If, for example, I suffered a financial loss from a strange price quote and Alpari tells me it was from one of their liqudity providers, there is no way for me to check if this is in fact true if I do not know who the lquidity provider in question is. I find that a most unsatisfactory position to be in when risking what for me will be large sums of money.

Without going into any great detail, could you possibly advise on what are the likely technical causes of choppiness and spikes, especially around or in the wake of news (other than liquidity issues). Good question.

Widened prices in periods of uncertainty such as news are often created simply by an absence of liquidity. Market-makers tend to pull their bids/offers until they can make a decision as to what the news might mean for the direction of the market. If liquidity evaporates then the prices that remain are likely to be legacy bids/offers. The primary function of a market-maker is not to provide liquidity, but to make profit for themselves whilst doing so. A wider price from a market-maker is just the premium they demand for providing liquidity. It is the cost of doing business. Of course market-makers are all human and opposing views are quite normal, hence some prices can differ significantly creating arbitrage opportunities.

So your liquidity providers include tier one banks that make markets in various currencies but they do not wish to be named? Why exactly is that?

I appreciate your inquisitiveness. If I were to deposit money anywhere, I'd be asking these questions as well. However as I've mentioned in my previous post, non-disclosure agreements prevent me from naming any of the multiple top tier 1 banks.

Yes, I understand that you are subject to FSA regulation and that you have signed non-disclosure agreements with your liquidity providers and I'm not suggesting that Alpari UK is in any way untrustworthy. I am just asking why your liquidity providers do not want to be named. What have they or you got to hide?

Look at it from your clients' point of view. Imagine if you went to buy a second hand car and the dealer told you that the price you had to pay would be calculated by looking at the prices being charged for that particular model by a pool of dealers across the country at that moment in time. Wouldn't you want to know who those dealers were or would you blindly trust the car dealer to be honest?....And that's just one car. Now imagine you are buying and selling thousands of cars every week and the price is being decided all the time by this secret panel of car dealers - how would you feel about that?

What's wrong with a bit of openness and honesty in the retail forex industry? Alpari and its liquidity privders could lead the way. Being regulated by the FSA is very nice and all but look at the LIBOR scandal - hardly inspires confidence that financial institutions never conspire to rig markets for their own benefit, even those that are regulated. And at least we knew who all the players were in that scandal.

The question you have failed to answer is why the banks that stream prices to you wish to remain anonymous. If, for example, UBS are providing you with quotes, why would they want to keep that fact a secret?
