What to watch for on Wednesday
The BoE Inflation Report and Riksbank policy decisions are both worth watching on Wednesday, while after a disappointing Eurozone IndProd release confirms that December completed a miserable quarter (-0.1% m/m to leave Q4 -0.5%), US retail sales and import supply the US input. Retail sales are expected to have been flat in January, up just 0.1% ex-autos, while import prices are expected to have risen by 0.7% m/m.
However the main threat to positions remain the occasional out-of-the blue headline along the lines of that seen Tuesday that suggested the G7 statement on FX has been misinterpreted and had been aimed at Japan and its directional policy on the JPY. Try as we might we could not see that in the statement, but in an atmosphere where he who hesitates is a big figure to the bad it would be little consolation just to have been right.
We are in a minority looking for a 25bp cut from the Riksbank, though with the market short and EUR/SEK close to range lows any step lower on 'no change' should be limited.
The focus on the inflation report will be on the projection for two years out - anything at 2% or over might give GBP at least a temporary lift.
Bond bugs have an Italian 3 year BTP auction to look for, some trepidation likely but we expect likely to be well enough received.
