Of course the beginning point matters.

Gas is up $2.09 over the past 4 years a change of 130%. But it is basically sideways from the price just a few months before that. And that was at the hight of the government interventionist housing bubble.

So our gas prices now are as high as when people were flipping houses for $70k profit after doing nothing.

Dow is up 7.25% YTD, Up 16.01% YOY, and down 2.06% over a 5 year period.

The point is that we have inflation. Inflation in all prices including stocks. But, stocks will not outperform because the corporations will have trouble passing on the inflated prices they pay to their customers as it goes higher and higher. So commodities will rise but corporate profits will fall.

Then the FED will be forced to raise rates or other countries will stop buying our Treasuries and rates will rise anyway. That will push down stocks in major sectors especially the financial sector which is just slightly profitable in a 0% rate environment.

Don't know about where you are located but gasoline (here in Florida) in mid 2008 was averaging $4.08, now $3.78

Also by early 2009 it was down to $1.62 but no one remembers when it goes down.

My point is that we have had inflation. The CORRECTION that we had in the stock market and commodities was a good thing. It was to correct the over inflated markets. It hurt the people who had all their money in stocks but it helped everyone's purchasing power. So even though they may have had less money their aggregate purchasing power would have been higher. Instead the FED pumped money in to help the current administrations friends and hurt everyone with no or little power.

Use it in tandem with usd/chf. If you stare at them long enough you'll know exactly where the bastards sell/buy...

The biggest problem with the inflation tax is that no one is allowed to plan on it. If the government said tomorrow that taxes were going up for everyone by 20% at least you could make plans based on the new taxes. It would be horrible. But you could save more money and cut some employees or sell your house for a smaller one or move to a different country with your savings. But with inflation you get broadsided with upward price pressure and you had no way to plan for it.

What I will say about inflation is that it's much better for the economy than its antithesis (barring extremes obviously).

I have to disagree.

Demand pull inflation which is what our government is engaging in is not good. You borrow and spend to goose the economy but it can only stay overheated for so long so it settles back into a more natural state and all you are left with is the price inflation.

The recession that they are trying to get us not to feel does increase unemployment. But, those were jobs that should not have been anyway. So those people have to find work in sectors that are viable long term. Creating a housing bubble so that you have lots of people in the construction business working is not a long-term economic strategy.

With a recession you also get the personal savings rate raising. That increases the available invest-able funds. Those funds go where they are most useful as long as the government doesn't intervene and that creates long term jobs.

how can you say that when one is "usd x currency" and one is "currency x usd"?

swissy from 89 to 99 and EU from 1.33 to 1.20, then EU bounce to 1.26 and swissy down to low 95s


obviously they move different directions, but only because of how they are quoted i guess.. in real terms euro is getting stronger and so is swissy

perhaps that is what you mean?
