It's true that, everything else being equal, costs make trading a negative expectancy exercise. But unless one has omniscient knowledge of all possible trading approaches and market outcomes, it's impossible to prove that "trading forex profitably long term is impossible". Conversely, it would take only one profitable trader to disprove your statement. I happen to have a friend who's been consistently profitable for more than 4 years now. I anticipate that you'll argue that he's merely been fortuitous thus far, and that the law of large numbers will eventually defeat him.

To be fair, it's also impossible to prove with absolute certainty that a strategy that's worked profitably in the past will always continue to do so in the future. But if the strategy has delivered profit consistently for a sufficiently long period of time, then it's probably reasonable to assume that markets will continue to operate in a vaguely similar way, and hence that the strategy will continue to remain profitable.

IMO post #12 by topherhk88 is the best in the thread. It gives excellent insight into both the difficulties in developing a profitable system, and also how to deal with questions like "was my recent losing streak merely a statistical aberration, or does my system no longer work?"

You might also enjoy the posts of FX-Petra. If I understand correctly, he previously believed that profitable trading was impossible, but more recently he's had some good success trading longer timeframe charts.

I also used to believe that profitable trading was a matter of luck, and that luck couldn't be sustained indefinitely. But, if I'm completely honest, that was because my ego didn't want to admit that others were achieving something that I couldn't. In hindsight, I see both arrogance and ignorance in my former outlook. And I had to ask myself: why am I still trawling forums like this one for informational nuggets, if I believe that trading is a totally futile exercise?

Yeah just like my memory, I choose to forget our conversations. I got better things to do than troll forums and poke fun at people for the font size they choose to use. But hey I can understand your inadequacies about feeling small compared to others.

I have been trading Forex Profitably for 5 yrs been trading stocks, options and futures for 8 years total I have 40 pips per day I trade the 5, 15 and 60 minutes charts so it is possible. The 5% that make it due to the hard work we put in during the learning phase which takes alot longer than a week or month like alot of newbies think it took me 1.5 t0 2 years to become consistant. I use counter trend and trend strategies. The key is to keep control over your emotions and take every set-up to let the probabilities to work in your favor.

I think the overall number that make it is greater than 5%. You can easily look to profitability statements of the brokers in the USA to see that every quarter that there are at least close to 30% of the accounts that are winning.

It's probably somewhere in the realm of 15-20% over the long term that win consistantly. I'm pretty sure most of these winning people don't come to forex factory.

Most people that come to forex factory are strugglers, scammers and brokers. I often wonder why the hell I come here... boredom is a full time occupation sometimes.

The quarterly reports on customer account performance prepared by brokers are extremely unreliable and potentially very misleading, they're certainly far from conclusive.

Trading forex profitable is impossible! It's lie! It can be very profitable and very unprofitable in my opinion, I know one girl she trades from time to time, but she is always in profit. I looked through the history of her account there was no one losing position.
Trading profitable is possible. However, it is impossible to generate massive profit in short time.

You need to do your homework first, once you understand the market behavior, trading become easy. Understand market behavior is similar to understand yr girlfriend/boyfriend character.

Next just discipline the trading objective everyday and every times, which is similar to eat breakfast, lunch and diner everyday. Sound simple but it take me almost 3 years of failure to success now.

Never did me any good, once they think you understand them they change just to keep you on your toes....hmmm, bit like the market really.

If their behaviour was consistent then they'd be easier to predict....unfortunately it's not and they're not.....again a bit like the market!

Yes we need discipline and to be honest it is my goal this year to improve that aspect of my trading as I have my methods of trading already.

Yup. Discipline ourself is much more important than any others. Nobody know what will be the next move ! If doesn't behave properly, might possibly miss out good opportunity. Haha..... i did have bad luck for missing all the good opportunity from a series of trades. When i get into game after the case, damn losing again because of bad opportunity.
