Why was the spike?
How lucky I was, just entered a long at 1.2427 and 1m later have 36pips thanked to the spike
ADD: maybe this caused the spike "EU willing to envisage direct ESM bank recapitalization."

This is why I use talking forex. I would have otherwise had no idea why this happened. They have so many announcements that come out that aren't on the FF calendar. Not to mention the random announcements or speakers.

Forex: EUR/USD rallies on EU’s will to use ESM

FXstreet.com (Barcelona) - The EU is willing to proceed to bank recapitalization via ESM. This news has just triggered a burst of risk rally, with the EUR/USD scoring 45 pips to 1.2471, and then retracing to 1.2450 area.

“The downtrend here has been renewed, targeting 1.2330 support area. The intraday bias is negative as well, with an initial resistance at 1.2460 and crucial area around yesterday's break-out level at 1.2510”, wrote Deltastock.com analyst Stoyan Mihaylov, pointing to support at 1.2412.
