Banks binge on ECB liquidity. The ECB lent 800 banks a total of €529.5B in its super low cost three-year second refinancing operation, above the €489B it supplied in December but below the €680B expected in a Goldman Sachs survey. The chief beneficiaries will probably include the Italian and Spanish governments when they next sell some debt. In response, EU stocks bounced around while the euro slipped and was -0.2% at $1.3439 at 6:50 am ET.
SEC poised to charge banks over mortgage bonds. Goldman Sachs (GS), Wells Fargo (WFC) and (apparently) JPMorgan (JPM) have received Wells notices from the SEC relating to the sale of sub-prime mortgage bonds during the credit boom. Such notices are an indication that SEC attorneys have recommended the agency file civil suits.
First Solar tumbles following Q4 earnings miss. First Solar shares melted 8.5% in post-market trading after a fairly awful Q4 report, with the company swinging to a net loss of $413.1M from a profit of $155.9M a year earlier due to write-downs, other charges and lower sales prices. Adjusted EPS fell to $1.26 from $1.88 and revenues rose 8% to $660M, with both figures missing forecasts. Because of weaker-than-expected demand, First Solar cut its 2012 revenue guidance, and said it will scale back output and halt plans for a new factory in Vietnam.
Costco's earnings grow. Costco's (COST) FQ2 net profit rose 13.2% to $394M, or 0.90 a share, and beat expectations, as net sales increased 10% to $22.51B.
Apple edges towards $500B market cap. Another day of Apple (AAPL) love yesterday pushed shares to another all-time high and propelled its market cap to within a hair of $500B - rarefied air indeed. Only five companies have ever had $500B market caps in absolute value terms, and three of those pooped out during the tech boom in 2000. Josh Brown's latest "thing Apple is worth more than": the U.S. interstate highway system.
France to delve into Google's privacy policy. France's data-protection regulator will launch an official investigation into Google's (GOOG) new privacy policy. The authority's preliminary view is that the policy doesn't conform to EU laws.
Fed makes $2.8B profit on former AIG bonds. The NY Fed yesterday completed the sale of its former AIG mortgage bonds, with total profits from three auctions of the assets amounting to $2.8B for the U.S. taxpayer. That's above the $1.5B the Fed would have made had it accepted AIG's offer for the entire portfolio a year ago.
DOJ turns Libor probe into criminal investigation. The DOJ is conducting a criminal inquiry into whether the world's largest banks manipulated the Libor inter-bank lending rate, a source tells Reuters. Though it was well-known that the probe was ongoing, it wasn't previously known to have a criminal aspect to it.
Feds probe GS manager over insider trading. Federal criminal authorities are reportedly investigating whether a top Goldman Sachs (GS) manager passed inside information about tech stocks to the firm's hedge-fund clients, The Wall Street Journal reports. David Loeb, a 10-year Goldman veteran, was mentioned by a defense witness during the insider-trading trial of Raj Rajaratnam last year.
German unemployment remains steady. Germany's jobless rate has stayed unchanged in February at a seasonally adjusted 6.8% vs. expectations for a modest decline to 6.7%.
Abbott in $1.35B deal for arthritis treatment. Belgian drug developer Galapagos has signed a deal worth up to $1.35B with Abbott Laboratories (ABT) for the development and production of an oral drug to treat arthritis and other auto-immune diseases.
Greece edges closer to bailout. Greece’s Parliament has ratified a €3.2B package of spending cuts in a 202-80 vote, bringing the country one step closer to securing its rescue funds. Another vote follows today over permanent changes to pension funds and healthcare spending.

Mid-Day Report: Euro Still in Range after ECB LTRO

Euro remains bounded in range after ECB said that another EUR 529.5b will be lent to 800 financial institutions in its second three-year LTRO operation. That's slightly larger than market's expectation of EUR 400b-500b but not far. Also, that compared to December's allotment of EUR 489b to 523 banks. While the total amount was more or less similar to expectation, the number of banks surprised the markets. It's taken as a signal that a lot more smaller financial institutions tapped into the funding and it's possible that more funding could be passed on to the real economy.

In other news from Europe, Ireland said it would hold a referendum on imposing the fiscal treaty that was agreed by 25 of 27 European Union states except UK and Czech. Prime Minister Kenny said he's confidence that the public will vote in favor of the treaty. But it's know that Irish votes somewhat have history of rejecting EU measures at polls. Germany's constitutional court overruled the government's attention to push eurozone bailout fund decisions through a special fast-track parliamentary panel meeting. That could eventually slow down approval of the emergency measures in repose to the debt crisis.

On the data front, US Q4 GDP was revised higher to 3.0% annualized. Economic data from Europe saw Eurozone CPI unexpectedly slowed to 2.6% yoy in January while core CPI also dropped to 1.5% yoy. Germany unemployment rate was unchanged at 6.8% in February. Swiss KOF leading indicator improved slightly to -0.12 in February. UK mortgage approvals rose to 59k while M4 money supply dropped -1.8% yoy in January. Gfk consumer sentiment was unchanged at -29 in February.

Banks gorge on 530 billion euros of ECB 3-year funds

A total of 800 banks borrowed money at the tender, with demand exceeding the 500 billion euros expected by traders polled by Reuters and well above the 489 billion allotted in the first such operation in late December.

"This will increase the level of excess liquidity pretty sharply which is ultimately positive or very positive for risk trades,» said Luca Cazzulani at UniCredit. «Italian and Spanish bonds are likely to benefit from this and equity markets as well."
The euro rose briefly before easing versus the dollar while stocks were little changed immediately after the slightly better-than-expected take-up.

The 3-year loans are the ECB's latest attempt to fight the eurozone crisis.

ECB President Mario Draghi, whose native Italy was at the epicenter of the crisis when the bank announced the measure late last year, said after the first of the operations, known as LTROs, that «a major, major credit crunch» had been averted.

Banks used much of the 489 billion euros they borrowed first time around to cover maturing debt. Draghi has urged them to lend out the funds they tap at Wednesday's operation to households and businesses, helping strengthen economic growth.

ECB officials hope banks will also use the new money to buy higher-yielding bonds more aggressively, especially from Italy.

Anecdotal evidence suggests banks especially in Spain but also in Italy used the first LTRO to make most of this «Sarkozy trade» - a term adopted by markets after the French president suggested governments look to banks flush with ECB cash to buy their bonds.

Spanish banks bought a net 23.1 billion euros of government debt last month and Italians 20.6 billion, both record increases.

Last round?
Italy faces a debt issuance hump in the next few months and could do with the second LTRO fuelling demand for its debt. It needs to sell around 45 billion euros of its bonds a month in both March and April versus 19 billion in February.
Nonetheless, sources have told Reuters that the central bank wants the second ultra-long operation to be the last one, as it is worried banks are becoming too reliant on ECB funds and wants to throw the onus back on eurozone governments to tackle the debt crisis.

Banks have already taken more funds from the ECB than ever before and risk becoming dependent on those. Italian banks had taken more than 200 billion euros in central bank funds by January, and those in Spain and France were not far behind.

The LTROs, or longer-term refinancing operations, have sucked much of the heat out of the euro zone crisis and given governments time to work out sustainable budget and growth policies for affected countries on the periphery of the bloc.

"With the ECB's supporting measures time is being won,» said Michael Kemmer, managing director of Germany's BdB banking association. «But these measures can neither replace a functioning interbanking market nor solve the debt crisis."

Rather than a simple flat rate, the 3-year funds were offered at an interest rate averaging the interest rate in its main one-week refi operations over the next three years. That rate is currently at a record low of 1.0 percent. Banks have the option of paying back all or parts of the loans at any time after one year.

Sometimes we need relax,to many serious post not good for our health

The market is thin no body wants to hold any risk nowadays, if you watch bloomberg and cnbc you'll have fund managers on talking shite about equities being cheap that now is the time to get in.. I wouldnt trust them as far as I'd drop kick them the Dow is at 13,000 the highest point since the financial crisis has anything really changed? The answer is obviously no its gotten worse. Everything is overbought and just waiting for any excuse to sell off everything and buy cheap assets again. I'm just eyeing the 200sma on the 1 day euro and on the one day dollar index this should provide the perfect carry trade to the downside/upside respectively until then scalping Gold is great and trading the European breakout..
