Waning enthusiasm over Italy's better-than-expected debt auction Wednesday sent a broadly weaker euro to its weakest level in more than a decade against the yen and a new 11-month low against the dollar, with jitters over Europe's debt crisis intensifying price action in holiday-thinned markets.
The euro tumbled as low as Y100.75, its lowest level since June 2001 and down about 1% on the day. The common currency also extended its losses against the dollar, falling to its deepest trough since mid-January versus the dollar at $1.2915.
Although Italy successfully auctioned six-month bills at sharply lower borrowing costs earlier Wednesday, volatile markets are now focused on Thursday's ten-year bond auction. The sale of long-term euro zone debt is seen as a tougher challenge, given widespread speculation that one or more of the 17-nation currency bloc's largest economies may soon have their credit ratings cut.
Meanwhile, Italy's benchmark ten-year government bond is perched near 7%, a psychological bulwark that is seen as unsustainable for a country's borrowing costs and which prompted Portugal and Ireland to seek international assistance. Yet analysts caution that sharp gyrations in markets are due largely to poor liquidity during the lull between Christmas and New Year's Day.

guys I dont understand why we are on a bullish trend. The only news that seemed interesting was the one about the 2.73 trillion that the ECB had. Isnt that supposed to be a good news for euro ?

Really? How do you think the ECB are increasing their balance sheet? Hint: LTRO should be included in your answer!

Then ask the question, how can the ECB increase the money supply. The short answer is print money, the long answer is that printing money is not in the ECB mandate, but there are many different ways of increasing money supply and the ECB are expecting all of the money back <cough> <cough>!
