I saw Pbh mentioned debt free money. And that is very interesting point and I dont want that one to fall into oblivion. I may look at the issue from another point of view, but hear my historical (well, maybe theological this time) mumbo jumbo:

In the old Izrael, there was this saint year, called Shmita. It was Sabbatical year which was each seven years. In this year, debts between jews were forgiven, since jews believed, that long term debt burden is not good for their national economy.

And look how far jews go, they are really good economists these guys. I think we should take an example. If I messed up something and there is a Hebrew among us, I would appreciate if you expand on the topic.

yeah, interesting idea. Old world money, gold or backed by gold, was limited and there probably was not enough to service a robust economy. The way around that was the fractional reserve ratio, or money backed by debt. New world money, fiat, is currently created by creating debt. However this is not necessary as the only real limit on money is a decision by the government. So instead of money being created by debt, it can only be created by government edict.

Might work. Certainly the wild fluctuation in money supply that the fractional reserve banking creates makes me uneasy.

I think he was referring to the Federal Reserve being seized by the people's government so all the money the gov spends is just printed and never has to be paid back. Of course such a system will never work but it's nice to dream.
Ironically, the money the Fed has printed will still never be paid back anyway... but that's a different matter

Besides all that, how would the USD have any credibility as a stable currency in the international markets? Who would want to risk buying USDs when the next day it could be worthless? There will be no accountability. That's just a couple of examples why it would not work. I compel you to use your imagination for the rest

Nope. And I am glad you brought my attention to it. I love economical films and didnt know about this one.

Regarding this topic (and forgive me for beeing theoretical as usuall ), I was thinking about it several times and you could have "people living standard" backed money . I know it sounds a bit crazy, but just think about it for a while. If you printed for example 100K for each living person within country, then you could redistribute money through capitalistic system, but the value of money would be constantly set and everyone had the same chance. In this system, money value would be set by living standard as you could use some basket of goods as a living standard for "regular" person in each country. Same way like you do basket of goods for CPI for example.

Ahh, If I continue to write such a wild theories you will stop reading my posts I know.

Hmm, now when I read his post again, you are right.

But I meant debt forgiveness, not monetization. Forgive and forget, lets move on, that is a very nice one way. And although it seems impossible, bankrupcy is extreme form of debt forgiveness. Would be better if they forgive some debt before bankrupcy chain effect takes place.

Ah, but currently the government prints and uses debt. So currently US currency has two things that reduce credibility and of the two, debt is by far the hardest to track and to control. So ending the fractional reserve ratio would reduce uncertainty and lack of credibility. It would also increase the ability to monitor government behavior and thus increase accountability.
