I'm a California surfing dude... except I have never been on a surf board and spend most of my time in California in the Rocky mountains. First time I saw the beach was in Canada. Too cold to swim and too cold to surf.
My tax rate (back when I worked) was great. 20% of income which was calculated AFTER I paid rent. And of course, I sublet from wife... for twice the original rent. As for cost of living... apples are .40 a pound. This was after inflation. They used to be .20 a pound.
Life as an expat is great. Not for all, but definitely for me.
