Sorry...distracted. The Q, Q...

If I have a file well in excess of 1GB...tick data...is there a way to have Excel access it without accessing all of it?

Going to sound like a ridiculously "nooooob" question, particularly because I'm not wording it correctly. But...I usually pull the dates I need using php. Problem is, sometimes I miss! What I'm looking for is a type of "snapshot view" from within Excel, without committing to full-on work. Excel seems to choke on large files...even most up-to-date version...with 24GB of system RAM ready to chew.

Have I made any sense? Have you deciphered enough to say...not a chance, you fool! Or...a tip or two, perhaps?

That's what never rang true to me about Bonfire of the Vanities. If the guy were an amoral bond salesman, he would have parked that Mercedes with the motor running on 10th Ave, walked to 9th, gotten a cab home, and announced it stolen. Not to step on Q's toes here... but if I am understanding what you are wanting, you basically want to filter certain tick data by a date/time range?

1- Does anybody know of the memory limit of Excel?*
2- Workarounds?**

*Even MT4 has a 2GB limit...put there are patches out there to go beyond.

**All fakking ears...because what else is 24GB of RAM doing under my hood...

Excel has a 2GB limit, AFAIK. Wtf are you doing with 24GB of ram. lol, please tell me that you have at least a 64 bit system... lol.

Does excel just not open? Is it slow? If you can get it open, I would use the data filter functions... buttt if it wont even open... I would probably use a progmatic approach to read and parse the file.

And I should say...

Excel can get NOWHERE near 2GB "out of the box" before choking.
