Speaking of that... I think I am going to write a grease monkey script to make this more chatroom'ish. Page refreshes suck... and I believe vbulletin has a ajax request I can pull from to pull back the latest topics of a given thread

But then incorporating this Ajax also with an ability to reply is a bit too dificult I guess.
Best with Ajax also is to add new replies to the top. And if you are away, it would be nice to have a pause function and then when you're back, you can go through new replies with right arrow key for example.
If you are going to check every 30 seconds or even less, it should not be a problem if the hardcore F5-ers are going to use the chatroomish page. This actually will decrease FF's server load ;-)

Oh I so wanna pay you for that! I thought of this also, but haven't really started to research how to. Unfortunately the server generates this page on every request. So checking every 30 sec for replies is a bit overloading the server. It doesn't sent out a HTTP 304 code (not modified). It does for all the images.

Vbulletin has a 'quick reply' feature that FF does not have turned on. Normally this puts a lightweight 'reply' box at the bottom of the thread, where in which you reply, and then the latest replies are loaded back in via ajax with your newly created reply at the bottom. As long as this ajax command is exposed it shouldn't be any problem what so ever
