It wasn't meant to be like this: joining the euro was meant to give Portugal, Spain, Italy and the other southern countries an incentive to impose economic reform. Instead of devaluing their currencies against the Deutschmark every few years to regain a foothold in international markets, they were supposed to become leaner and meaner – spurring competition, keeping labour costs down and tackling deep-seated problems such as ageing populations and unsustainable social systems. In effect, they were meant to become more German.

that is the biggest disadvantage of the EURO .
Weaker economies have chance to be more competitive when their currency is weaker.
Keeping euro strong makes no advantage for weaker economies.
Just check the EUR/PLN , EUR/PLN charts how the PLN currency behaved when financial crisis started.
Keeping euro strong makes no sense at all !!!!
But trading is completely different story , the trend is up so far

Wellington has been seen re-open the mkt at exactly same rate as Chicago has had the latest Interbank prices ...

In this case EURUSD closed at 1.4483 mid-price ... and re-open has been at 1.44845 ... while lowest has been 1.4446 until now ...
