The U.S. government is in a much stronger position than recently downgraded Japan, John Chambers, managing director and chairman of the sovereign rating committee at Standard & Poor's said in an exclusive interview with Dow Jones Newswires Thursday.
Chambers said the U.S., which currently carries a top-notch "AAA" rating, is in a better fiscal situation, is more willing to rein in deficits and has better growth prospects than Japan. S&P just cut its rating on Japan's sovereign debt to "AA-," which is three levels below the U.S. but still investment grade.
