My advice would be:

Don't.

Not because one cannot trade news spikes, but with all the limitations of on-line trading you do not stand a chance of making money on a consistent basis from such trading.

I´m not a Professional trader, actually I´m far from being it, but I can tell you that trading the news is the best way to throw your money out of the window with light speed. keep away from it, forget about getting rich quick.

Nice to hear you´re in good health! I myself didn´t tasted Crocodile but some old friends said it tastes little like snake, very rich meat and almost none fat.
20 % still buys some good toys. I wish you a Happy 2011. Keep in touch.

Killer, long time ago I demo-pracitced this pair - for about 8 or 10 years. To cut the long story short, as a trading principle I do not trade any Japanese Yen cross or the major. ............ Why? it frequently makes huge spikes. Stochastics maybe the right tool to use while trading Japanese Yen.

Once said that, I think if it goes below 81.00, obsever what it does between 81.00 and 79.00, if it takes a bounce, this pair is well known for following 40-50% fib. And that fib would be around 88.00.

My question is HOW and WHEN to trade at news times.

With proper money management I will not get rich instant, but I will not burn my account. At 2% lose I am out. 5% lose / day: I am not trading a few days. I am learning, review my trades, setups.

With new setups the SL should be below 0.5% (around 0.1%/trade or less), not 2%

Posting a picture for you. My chart show lines for both Bid Price and Ask Price. If spread widens during news release I know where I am standing. But the issue is what can you do if your stop loss that is 30 pips away from these spread lines still get hit, your platform freezes, you are disconnected, cannot log back again, you get frequent re-quotes (always against your position) and when you ask the brokers they give some sort of shit explaination like high / low whown on our charts are the average of all highs and lows during five minutes (but their price never goes to exact high/low strangly during only the news release), etc.

If you still want to trade news release, forget that you would be able to do what you want to do with your ordering, stops and take profits.

Try this out with few bucks, then decide. Until you do, the best time to trade news release is 48 hours before the news and 12 hours after the news.

10 pip spread during news release ... that is pure robbery ... there is no need for that ...

PM ... there is no need for that as well ... I would not give you any recommendation via Internet ... wether here ... nor via PM ... nor via e-mail ...

Moreover ... all I can say ... do not trade with such so-called 'finance services' that do all those advertising in such websites that we all know here ... none of them are sufficiant ...

Delays are not acceptable ... even not one second is ok ... but maybe you must accept such things unless you are not able to open a real Forex Account with real Forex Deposit Size ...

Go with those Companies that are very well known and that do have reputation since decades and /or better since aeons ...

Many good hints you might get if you take simply a normal phone call way ... and speak to some tradersections from Bloomberg, Reuters, Dow Jones or other services like that ... mostley they can give you some real good hints ...

I do often talk with those guys ... moreover you will find it more convenient like talking here so much about such things ...

Often they are very kind and really more helpful ... than all those 'experts' here ...

All you might hear here ... will lead to such AIDS similar deseases ...

In Internet you will find nearly always only the ugly ones ...

In case you have found a well reputated service ... you will never have more than 3 pip spread ... even in very exiting moments ... never you will have such things ...

And nearly never you will have delays like that ... as you reported there ... no slippage ... no freezing prices ... no reqoutes ... nothing like that ...

Stops are always stops ... and never will be executed a few pips away then ...

No so-called 'guaranteed stops' are needed then ... as they are always accurate in execution ...

Moreover you will have various facillities to take a trade ... even direct access to some floor traders places, phones and desks you will have then ...

In other words ... there is no need to discuss your trades in places like this then ... you will have better information sources for that ...

I have made good experiences with entry-stops either side 15 or 20 pips in distance from last trading level a few seconds prior to release ...

Just try out ...

But same is valid as mentioned before ... in case you are with the good ones ... you do have direct access ... and in case they do like you ... they will help you even in such moments with good and clear hints via phone call ...

Awesome calls Cloggie. I played untra conservative and only picked up 10 PIPS on Euro and 10 PIPS on Aussi drop. Thanks for all the help on learning levels of S/R.

here is what my indi and the gainscope news tell me; they match.

EUR/USD
It is more likely to go down to around 1.3050 or lower, and after that, it might have potentially to go up to around 1.3130.
