ZURICH (Dow Jones)--The Swiss National Bank revealed a big shift in tactics Thursday by announcing that it has been dumping euros and diversifying heavily into other currencies.

The central bank was once one of the foreign-exchange market's most enthusiastic buyers of the single currency as it battled to push the Swiss franc down in the opening months of this year. Now it has confirmed that it has been doing what currency traders have been saying for some time: offloading those excess euros.

Analysts think its euro-flogging is probably now over, but the shift still holds greater meaning, because its move to embrace what it calls "other currencies"--most likely to be the heavily traded Australian dollar--marks a step up for the Aussie into the mainstream for official accounts.

"Buying Australian dollars is very sensible," said Simon Derrick, a senior currencies analyst at The Bank of New York Mellon in London. "It's backed by gold. As people lose faith in currencies like the dollar and the euro, and the gold price rises as a result, that just strengthens the case for buying the Aussie."

In monthly data released Thursday, the SNB said that over the past three months, its euro reserves have slipped sharply, to EUR91 billion at the end of September from EUR121 billion at the end of June.

Meanwhile, yen holdings surged to Y1.7 trillion, from Y716.3 billion, while U.S. dollar reserves rose to $55 billion from $45 billion.

Reserves of Canadian dollars more than doubled from CAD3.8 billion to CAD9 billion. The SNB's holdings of "other currencies," which it doesn't specify, have shifted from negligible levels to almost the equivalent of CHF6 billion.

Geoffrey Kendrick, a currencies analyst at Nomura in London, said the Australian dollar probably makes up a large chunk of those "other" holdings. "This suggests that the bank might be shifting to a broader asset-allocation approach," he said in a note to clients.

David Kohl, chief currency strategist at Julius Baer, agreed that it is clear that the SNB is keen to diversify its holdings. "It's hard to say why the yen holdings have risen so sharply, though it may have to do with active management of the yen position, and the yen's recent appreciation," he added. The yen is trading close to its strongest levels on record against the dollar.

Analysts agreed that the SNB's shift out of its excess euro holdings has probably now come to an end. The SNB amassed large amounts of euros this year as it struggled to curb the Swiss franc's relentless advance, leading to a first-half book loss of CHF2.8 billion as the value of its euro-denominated assets declined. Now, the share of its holdings in euros has shrunk from 70% to 56%--a low level for a country so reliant on trade with the euro zone.

"At these levels, I would be surprised if they did sell any more euros. It had to sell some--it took on a huge amount of euros in May--but I doubt it will do more than this," said Derrick at The Bank of New York Mellon.

In European trading hours Thursday, the euro hovered around CHF1.35 against the Swiss franc. It hit a record low of CHF1.2765 on Sept. 4.

The Swiss franc has gained around 9% this year against the single European currency.
