Good question:

In the UK currently you will qualify for a State pension at 65 if male and 60 if female. Both will be aligned at the higher level which is currently planned to be 66 or 67 in the next few years matching the 'retirement age'.

In France the situation is the full state pension age is moving from 65 to 67 and retirement age from 60 to 62.

Retirement at 60 in France is generous compared to much of the European Union Member States but that doesn't mean it isn't worth fighting against.

Retirement in the US is 62 isn't it? If so expect it to be upped to 64 soon and to keep being upped every 5 years or so towards 70 and long-term 75. Potentially the sky is the limit unless you tell your government now that you don't want to die at work.

i mean somebody has to pay for the difference now if we are living longer.

i have to agree with u about that bigger life expectancy fact, but IMO that is not the real problem.. the real problem is that more and more ppl having burnouts at pretty early ages (starting with 40 years for example). the "work-world" is just crazy, that is the biggest problem.. i really don't wanna know how it will be in 80 years or so..

Therefore, it is only right, and fair for the younger generation, that the state retirement age is raised to keep pace. Obviously, some allowances need to be made for those in manual work.

The current pension system is unaffordable and totally unsustainable, as inconvenient a truth as that may be.

What about the old not retiring means that less jobs are created for the younger generation and more money is payed on benefits instead of pensions? just a question not trying to say you are wrong

An interesting point.... But a 65 year old married couple still in work are likely to spend far more money on holidays, new cars, new kitchens and new plasma televisions than a couple of the same age collecting the state pension. This extra spending will create demand in the economy and should be stimulative for job creation.

Same problem in France. Some politicians are trying to explain people they can live 30 more years and still retire at 60 with pensions being paid by younger generations. When the current system was designed (after WW2) there was almost 3 workers to pay for one pension (approx. I don't have the exact ratio in mind). Soon (if not already), we'll be at less than one for one.

I don't like our current governement, but I must admit something must be done ...
