EUR/GBP leaving some nice tails on its candlesticks the last couple of hours. Perhaps beginning to stall.

"NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--It would have seemed unlikely Monday, when the euro zone released surprisingly strong manufacturing data, but there's serious talk Tuesday that the European Central Bank might soon cut rates.

The Greek crisis is getting that bad.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, the People's Bank of China drained money from banks Tuesday, one day after it tightened their reserve requirements, and Australia's central bank ratcheted up its benchmark rate another quarter of a percentage point. Those responses reflect policy makers' fear of inflation in the Asian region, the opposite of the prevailing concern in Europe: that a giant sovereign debt burden will deliver an extended period of deflation pressures.

The first response Tuesday to Europe's market turmoil and the Asian region's monetary tightening, both of which amount to tighter credit conditions, has seen stocks, commodities and other risky assets tank while the dollar has rallied on safe-haven inflows. But over the medium term, as doubts grow over euro zone governments' capacity to prevent Greece's debt woes from infecting their banks, a better currency play might simply be to go long Asia, short Europe.

With yields on two-year Greek debt leaping 5 percentage points Tuesday, and stress appearing in the interbank lending market, the euro has already dropped to a 12-month low.

This reflects a mounting sense that the euro zone's $145 billion rescue package for Greece is insufficient to protect European banks and to stop the crisis from spreading to other countries such as Spain and Portugal. That in turn is fueling talk that the ECB must do something drastic.

With the provocative title of "ECB rate cut anybody????" Citibank foreign exchange analysts put out a research note Tuesday answering that question in the affirmative. They noted that yields on two-year German bonds are now a quarter-point beneath the ECB's benchmark refinancing rate of 1%, a scenario similar to past occasions when "the ECB capitulated."

Whether an ECB rate cut will resolve what is essentially a crisis of confidence in the entire euro project is an open question. But one thing's clear: It will make the euro less attractive than other, higher-paying currencies.

It will also undermine currencies from countries that depend on the euro zone for trade. Partly in reflection of that, the British pound, beset by its own debt problems and uncertainty over a tightly contested election on Thursday, dropped to a five-week low Tuesday.

More striking was the Polish zloty. It dropped 2% against the dollar and lost 1% against the struggling euro.

The zloty has been hit by a double-whammy: Poland's dependence on the euro zone, to which its aspires, and the overall flight from risk, which hit emerging market currencies across the board.

Contrast that with countries in China's orbit.

In its statement Tuesday, the Reserve Bank of Australia observed that contagion from the Greek crisis hadn't spread beyond Europe and said its dominant concern was robust growth in China. Based on similar logic, the Monetary Authority of Singapore reversed policy last month to signal a steady appreciation in the Singapore dollar.

Although the PBOC's efforts to curtail a bubble in China's asset markets will slow capital inflows into the Asian region, there's momentum to its economic boom, and that should keep its interest rates on an upward trend.

Note, also, that the definition of China's orbit extends beyond its geographic vicinity. Although commodities are falling Tuesday, demand from China should continue to lift resource-rich economies that sell to it: the Brazilian real, for example, or the Canadian dollar.

The U.S. dollar should ultimately be a bystander in all this. It's Asia versus Europe, and the winner is clear.
