DJ WORLD FOREX: Euro Down On View That Europe's Woes May Spread

TOKYO (Dow Jones)--The euro fell against the dollar and the yen in Asia on Thursday as a report in the Wall Street Journal encouraged views that Greece's fiscal problem could spread to other parts of Europe, prodding hedge funds to sell the risk-sensitive currency.

Citing Italy's Audit Court, the WSJ said late Wednesday that derivative contracts taken out by Italian municipalities could threaten local public finances for decades.
That shifted investor focus to debt issues in Italy, as well as to other places in Europe, including Portugal and Spain, dealers said. The euro has more room to extend losses, especially if any news related to its fiscal problems emerges, they added.
Also, behind the euro's fall was the International Monetary Fund's remarks overnight that it will sell its remaining 191.3 metric tons of gold on the open market, prompting purchases of the U.S. dollar against the commodity-linked Australian dollar and the risk-sensitive euro, dealers said.
The Australian dollar declined to $0.8958 from $0.8992 overnight. Gold prices stood at $1,103.15 per ounce in the Asian morning, down $10.65 from the New York close Wednesday.
As of 0450 GMT, the euro was at $1.3573 compared with $1.3607 late in New York. The single currency was also down to Y123.45 from Y124.10.
"Speculation is growing that Greece isn't the only fiscally embattled country in Europe," said Hiroshi Maeba, a senior trader at Nomura Securities. Global hedge funds are using the news as an excuse to take profits from overnight gains, he said, adding, "I expect the euro's downtrend may continue."
Some traders said the euro could fall to Y121.50 and $1.3500 later in the week. Meanwhile, the U.S. unit declined to Y90.94 from Y91.20 in New York late Wednesday, mainly due to selling of the euro versus the yen, which involves sales of dollars for yen in the process, dealers said.

I say Greece=Lehman, Italy=AIG, Spain=Merril, Portugal=wamu...you get the idea. One or more will eventually fail, they kind of have to. They might try and "bail" out the others but it's too little too late. all euro rallys are opportunities for sell for the next 1-2 quarters...maybe longer.
each day the news gets worse over in europe, the German poll supposedly has 70 percent of the population against bailout of Greece. Germans are the only ones as it is that have decent responsibility with their fiscal policies/budget.
You put it best the other day Gator when you brought up the point about Greece ditching the euro on their own accord and just going back to their own currency. I mean why not? It will fix their own country temporarily if anything and no one wants to help them.
