News message h3 { font-size:14px; } p { font-size:12px; } [UK DEC CPI - FADE THE BAD NEWS?] If the large jump in the y/y rate to 2.6% (IGM f/c 2.7%, rumour of 2.4% doing the rounds) comes to fruition, should i/rate markets be concerned? Opinion may be split on this, but we see little rationale to get overly bearish on the rate outlook. CPI will move higher largely on base effects (-0.4% m/m in Dec 2008) and recent rises in petrol/fuel prices, with infl seen up even further in the n/t (on VAT reversal from 15% to 17.5%) to the top of the BoE's target band (3%). Indications from the recent BRC shop price index, which tracks CPI quite well, also bodes ill for the official Dec print as it saw food & non-food goods both higher last month, the former 3.7% y/y vs 2.8% y/y previously and the latter from -1.2% to 1.4%. The BoE is very much aware that CPI will rise in the n/t & this should be no real shock with the base line view infl will drop back below 2% by yr-end.
