yes, a lot of retail shorts...but there were even more yesterday...I don't pay too much attention to this contrarian indicator.

"EURUSD - The ratio of long to short positions in the EURUSD stands at -1.99 as nearly 67% of traders are short. Yesterday, the ratio was at -2.06 as 67% of open positions were short. In detail, long positions are 3.2% lower than yesterday and 33.5% weaker since last week. Short positions are 6.7% lower than yesterday and 23.9% stronger since last week. Open interest is 5.6% weaker than yesterday and 0.4% below its monthly average. The SSI is a contrarian indicator and signals more EURUSD gains."

Yeah, gold is becoming a bit of a joke really....there's no logical reason that I can see to warrant this surge....

I'll add this too. $1300 before Christmas and less than $1000 in Jan/Feb.

Maybe. Maybe not. Several Sovereign Govts have come out and said they are accumulating gold, and are going to do so over a period of time.

That's true, however I have to ask myself why? For instance, when India recently bough 200 tonnes of the stuff, the price shot up. They didn't (and haven't) sell it for a handsome profit (as far as I know), so there must be another reason for the purchase. I can't imagine what it is.

When the price drops, and drop it will, surely they will be left holding 200 tonnes of metal that's worth less than they paid for it.

Also, gold is only worth what a buyer is prepared to pay for it because it has no commercial use. So when these Sovereign Govts have bought enough of the stuff, what will they do with it? Who will buy it? and at what deflated price?

Lot's of questions but I have no answers!

Well, i give you my understanding. When a country buy gold, is not just to buy/sell like we do in currency but this gold strengthen their country currency. Any paper money in the world has no value if there is nothing to support it from behind. It's just paper. But this paper when is backup by gold then only it has value. So when India bought 200tonnes of gold. They might be printing more paper..

They are probably thinking that having a large cache of gold will inspire long-term confidence in their currency. Think of gold as a "backup" reserve currency as the $ reserve system breaks down and the world starts to shift from the current power structure.
