Hi Kevin,

I have been demoing with GoMarkets for some time and I haven't had any problems with EA take profits or stop losses.

The only broker I have had this problem with is MBT.

Sounds good. When you were testing the EA.. which currencies did you use and have success with? Looks good on EURUSD on H1 so far.

In general, when a death trade occurs how long is it from the first trade to the point of margin call? This will be helpful in determining the entry filters like ATR so that for example if the length of time is 2 days usually (on average) then you can look at the ATR(14 period) in the daily timeframe as an entry filter. This will increase chance of success and decrease chance of getting into high water mark territory.

With high water mark turned off we can figure out where the margin calls occur and do an analysis to optimize the entry filters.

I've been doing some testing on a death trade situation and I need some help on inputs for watermark parameters:

MaxPercentMarginProfitAdjust
MaxPercentMarginLiquidate

1) Do we enter a positive or negative number?
2) Do we enter a percentage (eg. -20%) or a dollar value (eg. -2000)?


Edit: I figured it out - one must enter positive percentage inputs.

The Volatility filter doesn't work isVolatile()

should return a bool:

"return(goodVolatility || spikeVolatility);"

This is why it doesn't trade if you have volatility filter enabled

Hello, everybody.
I’m testing the system in demo mode using GBPUSD, 20pip y 3levels and high water mitigation strategy with maxpercentmargenliquidate=xy (x=Increment, y =multiplier factor) . My interest isn’t to allow running de EA during 24h 5 days, my interest is to allow to run de EA since London open to the end of the first grip. The reason is that London open usually accelerates the momentum, that is definitively this EA needs in order to be profitable. (the death trade is possible, but with the two mitigation strategies incorporated in latest 2.5 and London momentum, the EA can be profitable. We only need to adjust property the maxpercentmargenliquidate)
So, it´s necessary to add a new function that close the EA when the grip hits the TP.
TRADINGVIPER , can you add a function that close automatically the EA when the first grip hits the TP. Now, when the EA hits the TP, another grip is launched, and again, and again, …

Hi antoniomago,

If you wish to run this EA for only 1 grid, you can set MaxSetEntryCount to 1. The EA will stop placing further trades as soon as the first TP is hit (First set is closed in profit).

Hi Viper,

I was demo testing v5 and noticed that when I had the stealth mode open, the losing position didn't get closed as soon as the TP was hit on winning positions.

Instead, that particular order was open while all other pending orders were getting closed.

I then manually intervened and closed that position in order to protect some gain.

I thought I share my experience here.

Hello Everyone,

it is first time I am posting here and I hope and believe I can contribute to this thread. I am new to the forum, but certainly not a novice for Forex - have been doing it for a bout 5 years full time.

I have used mGRID (the original version, to which I have mad many modifications) for quite some time on a live account until yesterday, when I lost about $5k on GBPCHF. I lost it because the EA does not work properly - in time of high volatility (and very low volatility too) when spreads are much higher, the orders are all over the place and when it finally hit the TP level, the balance was $5k lower.

I found the viper EA and tried it on the tester. I believe that if we apply the changes I have made to the original mGRID to the ViperEA it will be the most profitable and NOT dangerous EA.

Working with the mGRID for a while I have realized that no matter what money management you apply, if you do not enter at the right time you are still going to have a big drawdown ( just for the record I was using mGRID with 0.1lot on $30k account with leverage 500:1 - Alpari UK). I also have a micro account with ALPARI UK and the problem is that it has a limit of 2 standard lots. It looks like NordMarkets is the way to go - because you can trade micro lots with no limitation on the total lots size.

In my next posting I will post some chars with comparison between the Viper EA and mGRID(OSD). OSD are my initials and I will use them to distinguish between the original mGRID and the mGrid modified by me (I am not a programmer, I have paid to have all those changes)

I just wanted to check with you guys if it is really worth the effort to post the results here. If there is no programmer willing to take up the task, then is probably not worth the time.

MGrid does not have many of the protective features the ViperGrid has. However it enters at the right time and the draw down is much smaller then the Viper. No need to clean out positions

Mr. Viper, would you be interested to talk more about this. Any programmer out there?

During backtests for EURUSD H1 no matter what settings I apply (1/2/3 level, 25 increment/autoincrement, trend filter on/off, volatility filter on/off, atr filter on/off, low water mitigation) I always get a big loss which cuts my account by more than a half.

What changes are you talking about, you added a better entry filter to mgrid? What are the exit strategies in mGrid. I am a programmer I can try to help you out.

Here is how I have changed mGrid(please consider this as a suggestions to improve the ViperGrid)

1. Consolidate the pending orders - no need to have 3,4,5 or more pending orders on one level - it probably bothers the broker and more importantly - it is difficult to track and monitor the work of the EA. As soon as a pending order has to be placed on a level that already has a pending order on it - delete the existing pending order and place the total of the existing and the new lots.

2. See the attached screen shot. I have been using i-Regr channel to filter the trades. Your best chances of hitting the Take Profit level are when you place the pending order in the beginning of a new trend. Place the pending orders only if price crosses i-regr channel from the outside in direction in, only if you have had x number of candles closing on the outside the i-regr channel.

3. Measure the slope of the channel and only place pending orders (start the new set) if price crosses the channel line in the same direction. For examlpe - If i-regr channel has a positive slope only place pending orders when price crosses the bottom line of the channel in direction in and up.

I also have a version of the mGRID that I have been using for semi automatic trading(SATLEA GRID - it stands for Semi Automatic Trend Line EA) - the trades are triggered only if the price touches a trend line. Some time the price will get to just couple of pips from the trend line and will bounce back - that is why there is a zone drawn on both sides of the trend line. The Ea gets triggered once the price is in the zone. It is very logical - one of two thing will happen when the price touches the trend line - it will either bounce and reverse or it will break through and keep going. Either way you will have enough movement to hit the tp level. I have attached both i-regr Grid and the trend line grid

Please DO NOT USE THEM ON A LIVE ACCOUNT, IT JUST COST ME A BUNDLE.

On another thought I was going to make it with two trend lines. This way you so not have to guess which way the price is going to go - if one of the trend lines triggers the pending orders - delete the other.

I believe that if we apply all those improvements to the ViperGridEA it will be much better. mGRID with all its flaws performed rather well, imagine how much better ViperGrid will be.

Feel Free to copy the improvements from mGrid and paste them in Viper(LOL - I know is not that simple)

By the way, I bothered to read through all 61 pages of this thread and I never, not once saw the word optimization. Is anyone doing any optimization or is everyone suicidal ( only if you use it live).

One question to whoever can answer it:

Is the ViperGrid EA time frame dependent, ie, does it matter the time frame of the chart it is placed on. I would think it is because of all filter added, they must be dependent on the time frame of the chart, but I would like someone who knows the EA really well to confirm it

We have tried to optimize this EA to the 'nth' degree but it WILL eventually hit the death trade.

The best way to think about any EA within this thread is that the Death trade is inevitable.... the ability to climb yourself out of massive DD without destroying the account is the key to survival.


Time frame is completely irrelevant due to the EA's strickly working off pip movement. A 20 pip move in either direction is the same on the 5 min chart as it is in the 1 hour chart. The filters are hadly used because they haven't really provided any real benefit.


Although i personally think it is impossible, if you can come up with a good strategy (that hasn't been mentioned before in this thread) that doesn't use indicators (lagging instruments) and can get you out of a Death trade with minimal harm then these EA's will not only work, but make you wealthy in a very short period of time.

Hope people can prove me wrong but i am highly doubtful it can be achieved.

I think the filters are not working as is... entering on a trend is key and the i-regr might help.. and you can say after 4 or 5 grid levels just try to set profit level to 1... this would allow you to get out of potentially high DD situations.

So your supposition is that when the price closes above or below this i-regr ( bolliger band type indicator) then you should take a trade?

I like the idea since either it would be a breakout or sharp retracement if it reaches the outer edges of the i-regr band.

I am testing it out on Viper Grid 2.5

were you using the protective features in vgrid when you did the testing. just want to know if its like for like comparison.

i'm running live on an account which is half descent size now. i'm finding vgrid a heck of a lot superior to mgrid. mgrid just opens too many positions. vgrid requires the same equity mgrid does because it opens less positions but further appart.

i like the idea of your trendline entry ea. i've done that manually with vgrid and pulled some very comfortable trades.

as far as trading euro usd is concerned, its the only pair thats ever bought me anyware near to collapse. prefer eurojpy and gbpusd.

left all other pairs because of inbalance between spread and my prefered increment size.
