...is possible. When I started I loaded my account with a few thousand, but used money management that acted like there was only $50 in the account. I aggressively grew that $50 to the full starting size of the account. I then withdrew my original deposit, making myself "whole". You will trade more liberally when you've reached such a point. And yes, months later, I trade for a living now - full time. A couple of things, though:

1) You have to wait for the perfect set up - and this also means avoiding the news. I prefer higher probability setups on a consistent basis to wide ranging news/speculative movements any day of the week.

2) As your account grows, diminish your per position risk

3) You will eventually hit lotsize ceilings, due to broker restrictions (and if not that, your own prudence)

4) You will be a slave to your computer during the London and NY sessions, when liquidity is the highest. Again, you will only trade the perfect setup.

The problem is doing that with a big account

While 100% a year over several years is possible and is done, the % per day over anything other than very short term, you are talking about is foolish as others have pointed out.
You could not have used MM as though there was only 50 in your account when your account had several thousand, you mean you used fixed % risk, eg risk 50 when your account is 5,000 = 1% risk. so you used MM on your full account. Isn't that so?
and when your account grows, why risk less than this?
