Until the US dollar losses its reserve status, it's still the reserve, and that means every indication or threat of escalation of tension sees me buying the US dollar.

Worst-case scenario

"Increased trade tensions, if they develop, will raise market speculation that China could retaliate against the U.S. by either reducing its outright purchases of Treasurys or, in a worse-case scenario, selling some of its existing holdings of Treasurys," HSBC said.
"That is easier said than done, as China's ongoing [foreign-exchange] intervention and subsequent accumulation of U.S. dollar mean that they will have an ongoing need to purchase more Treasurys. But from the market's perspective, the perceived risk of diminished Chinese interest in U.S. Treasurys -- if that develops -- will be bearish for the U.S. dollar," it said.
The recent spat may well remain topical in the media and financial markets ahead of the U.S. President Barack Obama's meeting with Chinese leaders at the Group of 20 nations' summit in Pittsburgh later this month, HSBC said.
China, armed with the world's largest foreign exchange reserves of more than $2 trillion at the end of June, is a major purchaser of U.S. sovereign debt.

“The DPJ seems to be against intervention, but it’s a different story if the yen continues to appreciate amid the unclear recovery of the Japanese economy,” Ikeda said. “If the yen strengthens towards 85 yen per dollar, then the government may intervene.”

Oanda wire rumors large E/U option expiry strike @ 1.4560 at 1400 GMT today, size 750 mio-2 bio....

If true & if we have a confluence of red US news (Retail sales, etc) then we could see lower .45xx...

The current strength of the euro means the Chinese government may not be buying any time soon.


If the big player won't be buying, who will?

That goes back to my posting about the Chinese options buying last month. They bought for 1 month, so it's not all expiring same day. Which suits me just fine.

No wonder EUR/USD lower

Some heavy duty names have been selling EUR/USD this morning, including China and BIS around 1.4635/40. Middle East names have also been selling and Russia is said to have just pushed the pairing through 1.4600, triggering some stops which don’t appear to have been overly large.
Talk of large 1.4560 option expiry today.

can some kind soul point out to me more elaboration on this option stuff? I still have lot to learn. 10q.

Ok, I admit. But this position is tiny. My rational is current value, support level, news and rumors tend to indicate opposite effect, basically RR involved with reversal versus blowing support. Also some long breakout features, though not neccessarily follow through.
